We present the results from the heavy quarks and quarkonia working group. This report gives benchmark heavy quark and quarkonium cross sections for $pp$ and $pA$ collisions at the LHC against which the $AA$ rates can be compared in the study of the quark-gluon plasma. [...]

Parton saturation and $N_{part}$ scaling of semi-hard processes in QCD / Kharzeev, Dima E ; Levin, E ; McLerran, L
We argue that the suppression of high p/sub t/ hadrons discovered recently in heavy ion collisions at RHIC may be a consequence of saturation in the color glass condensate. We qualitatively and semi- quantitatively describe the data, in particular, the dependence upon the number of nucleon participants. [...]

We have previously interpreted the various large apparent violations of the naive Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka (OZI) rule found in many channels in $\bar{p}p$ annihilation at LEAR as evidence for an intrinsic polarized $\bar{s}s$ component of the nucleon wave function. The model is further supported by new data from LEAR and elsewhere. [...]

Heavy quarkonium as a probe of dense matter / Kharzeev, Dima E (CERN ; Bielefeld U.) ; Satz, Helmut (CERN ; Bielefeld U.)
We discuss the use of quarkonium as a probe of hot and dense matter produced in relativistic heavy ion collisions. We show that hard gluons present in the deconfined matter easily break up quarkonium states, whereas the softness of the gluon distributions in confined matter makes it almost transparent for slow J /,P's. A Quantitative Analysis of Charmonium Suppression in Nuclear Collisions / Kharzeev, Dima E ; Lourenço, C ; Nardi, M ; Satz, Helmut
Data from J/psi and psi' production in p-A collisions are used to determine the cross section for absorption of pre-resonance charmonium in nuclear matter. The J/psi suppression in O-Cu, O-U and S-U collisions is fully reproduced by the corresponding nuclear absorption, while Pb-Pb collisions show an additional suppression increasing with centrality.
