Dynamic aperture studies for vertical fixed field accelerators
/ Vanwelde, M (U. Brussels (main)) ; Hernalsteens, C (CERN) ; Gnacadja, E (U. Brussels (main)) ; Ramoisiaux, E (U. Brussels (main)) ; Tesse, R (U. Brussels (main)) ; Pauly, N (U. Brussels (main))
Vertical orbit excursion Fixed Field Accelerators (vFFAs) feature highly non-linear magnetic fields and strong transverse motion coupling. The detailed study of their Dynamic Aperture (DA) requires computation codes allowing long-term tracking and advanced analysis tools to take the transverse motion linear and non-linear coupling into account. Gantry design using achromatic scaling fixed-field magnets
/ Tesse, Robin (Brussels U.) ; Hernalsteens, Cédric (CERN) ; Ramoisiaux, Eliott (Brussels U.) ; Gnacadja, Eustache (Brussels U.) ; Vanwelde, Marion (Brussels U.) ; Pauly, Nicolas (Brussels U.)
Proton therapy provides significant advantages over classic radiotherapy for specific cancerous diseases, notably by limiting the delivered dose to organs at risk (OARs). Novel treatment modalities such as flash and arc therapy require changing the energy delivered at the isocenter while providing a high dose rate. [...]

Conceptual lattice design for vertical fixed field medical accelerators
/ Vanwelde, Marion (Brussels U.) ; Hernalsteens, Cédric (CERN) ; Ramoisiaux, Eliott (Brussels U.) ; Gnacadja, Eustache (Brussels U.) ; Pauly, Nicolas (Brussels U.) ; Tesse, Robin (Brussels U.)
Hadron therapy is established as a method of choice for a number of cancerous diseases, and its advantages are well-established for specific malignancies. Modern medical particle accelerators still struggle to fulfil critical features required by advanced treatment modalities, such as variable energy beams, high repetition rate, and pulse-by-pulse intensity modulation. Increased dose rate for a proton therapy eye treatment nozzle on a medical gantry system using a diamond degrader
/ Gnacadja, Eustache (Brussels U.) ; Hernalsteens, Cédric (CERN) ; Pauly, Nicolas (Brussels U.) ; Ramoisiaux, Eliott (Brussels U.) ; Tesse, Robin (Brussels U.) ; Vanwelde, Marion (Brussels U.)
The IBA ProteusOne (P1) system is suitable to treat ocular tumors and achieves efficient dose conformality using state-of-the-art pencil beam scanning. Nevertheless, with the limited cyclotron current of the P1 system, clinically relevant (> 15 Gy/min) dose rates can barely be achieved in eye tumors treatment cases with the baseline configuration of the system due to the significantly high energy degradation required (from 230 to 70 MeV). Machine protection perspective on the restart of the large hadron collider after long shutdown 2
/ Wiesner, Christoph (CERN) ; Hernalsteens, Cédric (CERN) ; Solfaroli, Matteo (CERN) ; Wenninger, Jorg (CERN) ; Wollmann, Daniel (CERN) ; Uythoven, Jan (CERN)
In 2022, the Large Hadron Collider started its third operational run. Following the three-year Long Shutdown 2, a careful re-commissioning of the machine protection system (MPS) took place. [...]

Study of the Performance of the CERN Proton Synchrotron Internal Dump
/ Pugnat, Thomas (CERN) ; Domange, Delphine (Brussels U.) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; Giovannozzi, Massimo (CERN) ; Gnacadja, Eustache (Brussels U.) ; Hernalsteens, Cédric (CERN) ; Huschauer, Alexander (CERN) ; Niang, Samuel (CERN) ; Tesse, Robin (Brussels U.)
In the framework of the LHC Injector Upgrade project, a new internal dump for the CERN Proton Synchrotron (PS) has been designed, installed, and successfully commissioned. This device is meant to move rapidly into the beam and stop charged particles over several turns to provide protection to the PS hardware against beam-induced damage. [...]

Shower Simulations for the CERN Proton Synchrotron Internal Dump and Comparison with Beam Loss Monitor Data

During the Long Shutdown 2 (LS2), two new internal dumps (TDIs) were installed and successfully put into operation in the CERN Proton Synchrotron (PS) to withstand the intense and bright beams produced for the High Luminosity LHC. TDIs serve as safety devices designed to rapidly enter the beam trajectory and stop the beam over multiple turns. [...]
