/ Parr, E (West Scotland U. ; SUPA, UK) ; Smith, J F (West Scotland U. ; SUPA, UK) ; Greenlees, P T (Jyvaskyla U.) ; Auranen, K (Jyvaskyla U.) ; Chapman, R (West Scotland U. ; SUPA, UK) ; Cullen, D M (Manchester U.) ; Grahn, T (Jyvaskyla U.) ; Grocutt, L (West Scotland U. ; SUPA, UK) ; Herzáň, A (Jyvaskyla U. ; Bratislava, Inst. Phys.) ; Herzberg, R D (Liverpool U.) et al.
Fine structure in the α decay of $^{221}_{90}$Th, populating excited states in $^{217}_{88}$Ra, was studied using αγ-coincidence spectroscopy. Two α-decay branches from $^{221}$Th have been newly observed, with $E_{\alpha} \mathrm{(keV)} [b_{\alpha}(\%)]=7951(8)[0.14(3)]$ and $8247(3)[1.51(12)]$, together with three previously known branches. The neutron-deficient mercury isotopes serve as a classical example of shape coexistence, whereby at low energy near-degenerate nuclear states characterized by different shapes appear. The electromagnetic structure of even-mass $^{182-188}$ Hg isotopes was studied using safe-energy Coulomb excitation of neutron-deficient mercury beams delivered by the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN. The electron spectrometer, SPEDE, has been developed and will be employed in conjunction with the Miniball spectrometer at the HIE-ISOLDE facility, CERN. SPEDE allows for direct measurement of internal conversion electrons emitted in-flight, without employing magnetic fields to transport or momentum filter the electrons. [...]

A recently developed portable, on-line capability for γ-ray and conversion-electron spectroscopy, HIGH-TATRA is demonstrated with its application to the study of (183)Hg $\to $ (183)Au at ISOLDE. Key details of the low-energy level scheme of the neutron-deficient nuclide (183)Au populated in this decay are presented. [...]

We report experimental attempts to determine the sign of the electric dipole moment (relative to the electric octupole moment) in the octupole deformed nucleus 226 Ra. Sensitivity to this quantity is observed in the measured yields of γ-ray transitions following very low energy Coulomb excitation..
