/ Sandberg, Hampus (Manchester U. ; CERN) ; Bertsche, William (Manchester U.) ; Bodart, Dominique (CERN) ; Dehning, Bernd (CERN) ; Gibson, Stephen (Royal Holloway, U. of London) ; Levasseur, Swann (CERN) ; Satou, Kenichirou (J-PARC ; KEK, Tsukuba ; JAEA, Ibaraki) ; Schneider, Gerhard (CERN) ; Storey, James (CERN) ; Veness, Raymond (CERN)
The principle of non-destructive beam profile measurement with rest gas ionization electrons has remained largely unchanged since the technique was first proposed in the late 1960's. Ionization electrons (or ions) are transported by an electrostatic field onto an imaging detector, where the spatial distribution of detected electrons is a direct measure of the transverse beam profile. The Beam Gas Vertex detector (BGV) is an innovative beam profile monitor being developed as part of the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) project at CERN. The goal is to continually measure the transverse beam size by reconstructing tracks originating from beam-gas interactions using high precision tracking detectors. [...]

A serious problem for high current accelerators is the high density of the beam, which is able to destroy the equipment and to make a quench of super conductive magnets. Loss of even a small fraction of this intense beam equipment. [...]

The European Spallation Source (ESS) to be under construction in Lund, Sweden, will provide a highest average intensity beam from a 5 MW superconducting proton linear accelerator to produce spallation neutrons. A serious problem for high current accelerators is the high density of the beam, which is able to destroy the equipment, to make a quench of super conductive magnets [...]

First Results From the Operation of a Rest Gas Ionisation Profile Monitor Based on a Hybrid Pixel Detector
/ Storey, James (CERN) ; Bertsche, William (Manchester U.) ; Bodart, Dominique (CERN) ; Dehning, Bernd (CERN) ; Gibson, Stephen (Royal Holloway, U. of London) ; Levasseur, Swann (Royal Holloway, U. of London) ; Sandberg, Hampus (Manchester U.) ; Sapinski, Mariusz (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Satou, Kenichirou (KEK, Tsukuba) ; Schneider, Gerhard (CERN) et al.
A novel rest gas ionisation profile monitor which aims to provide a continuous non-destructive bunch-by-bunch measurement of the transverse emittance is currently under development for the CERN Proton Synchrotron (CPS). Uniquely for this type of instrument the imaging detector that measures the position of the ionisation electrons consists of an array of pixelated silicon sensors which are read-out using Timepix3 readout chips. A new generation of beam wire scanner (BWS), for transversal beam profile monitoring, is under development on the framework of the LHC Injector Upgrade project at CERN. Two pre-series prototypes have been built and installed in the Super Proton Synchrotron and Proton Synchrotron Booster, to assess the performance of the upgraded BWS concept. [...]

The Beam Gas Vertex (BGV) monitor is being developed as part of the High Luminosity LHC project with the aim of providing measurements with less than 5% error on the beam size with an integration time of 5 minutes. It will be the only instrument capable of non-invasive beam size measurement throughout the LHC acceleration cycle with high intensity physics beams. [...]

Performance study of little ionization chambers at the Large Hadron Collider

The main detector type for beam loss monitoring of the LHC is a parallel plate Ionization Chamber (IC). In the locations where the beam losses could saturate the read-out electronics of the ICs, two other monitor types, Little Ionization Chambers (LIC) and Secondary Emission Monitors, have been installed to extend the dynamic range of the ICs.
