Benchmarking power deposition from fast losses of heavy-ion beams at the onset of LHC Run 3 / Rodin, Volodymyr (CERN) ; Lechner, Anton (CERN) ; Salvachua, Belen (CERN) ; Mirarchi, Daniele (CERN) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; D'Andrea, Marco (CERN) ; Schoofs, Philippe (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Cai, Rongrong (CERN) ; Morales Vigo, Sara (CERN) et al.
In 2023, the LHC started its Run 3 operation with $^{208}\text{PB}^{82+}$ beams at 6.8 ZTeV, with a substantially higher number of bunches compared to past runs. Several new hardware systems were used operationally for the first time with high-intensity beams, including bent crystal collimators in the betatron cleaning insertion. [...]

At the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), bent crystals play a crucial role in efficiently redirecting ion-beam halo particles toward secondary collimators used for absorption. This innovative method leverages millimeter-sized crystals to achieve deflection equivalent to a magnetic field of hundreds of Tesla at LHC’s highest energies. [...]

In the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), bent crystals are used to efficiently deflect beam halo particles toward secondary collimators used as absorbers. In this crystal collimation scheme, a crystal with a length of a few millimeters can produce a deflection equivalent to a magnetic field of hundreds of Tesla at LHC top energies, improving the cleaning performance of the machine. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) employs special optics and configurations, alongside low-beta* collision optics, to address specific experimental requirements. These include calibrating luminosity monitors (vdM) and facilitating forward physics measurements in TOTEM and ALFA experiments (high-beta). [...]

Colorflow Studies in the ATLAS Boosted Higgs Boson Tagger / D'Andrea, M (INFN, Rome ; Rome U.) /ATLAS Collaboration
Enhancing the discrimination power to identify Higgs boson decay events into a pair of bottom quarks in the boosted regime is of significant importance within the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Effectively identifying this specific process enhances the collected sample of Higgs boson production events, hence reducing the statistical uncertainties in the determination of the properties of this particle. Recent Developments with the New Tools for Collimation Simulations in Xsuite / Van der Veken, Frederik (CERN) ; Abramov, Andrey (CERN) ; Broggi, Giacomo (CERN ; Rome U., La Sapienza, Dip. di Astron.) ; Cerutti, Francesco (CERN) ; D'Andrea, Marco (CERN) ; Demetriadou, Despina (CERN) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; Hugo, Gabrielle (CERN) ; Iadarola, Giovanni (CERN) ; Lindström, Bjorn (CERN) et al.
Simulations of single-particle tracking involving collimation systems need dedicated tools to perform the different tasks needed. These include the accurate description of particle-matter interactions when a tracked particle impacts a collimator jaw; a detailed aperture model to identify the longitudinal location of losses; and others. Simulations and Measurements of Betatron and Off-momentum Cleaning Performance in the Energy Ramp at the LHC / Triantafyllou, Natalia (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; D'Andrea, Marco (CERN) ; Dewhurst, Kay (CERN) ; Lindström, Bjorn (CERN) ; Mirarchi, Daniele (CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Van der Veken, Frederik (CERN)
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is equipped with a multistage collimation system that protects the machine against unavoidable beam losses at large betatron and energy offsets at all stages of operation. Dedicated validations and an understanding in simulations of the collimation performance are crucial for the energy ramp from 450 GeV to 6.8 TeV because complex changes of optics and orbit take place in this phase. Evaluation of Power Deposition in HL-LHC with Crystal-assisted Heavy Ion Collimation / Rodin, Volodymyr (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Cai, Rongrong (CERN) ; D'Andrea, Marco (CERN) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; Lechner, Anton (CERN) ; Potoine, Jean-Baptiste (CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Schoofs, Philippe (CERN)
The future LHC heavy-ion program, utilizing 208Pb⁸²⁺ beams at up to 7 Z TeV, is anticipated to operate with substantial intensity upgrade. During periods of short beam lifetime, a potential performance limitation may arise from secondary ions produced by electromagnetic dissociation and hadronic fragmentation in the collimators of the betatron cleaning insertion. Collimation of 400 MJ Beams at the LHC: The First Step Towards the HL-LHC Era / Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Abramov, Andrey (CERN) ; Baillard, Dylan (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Cai, Rongrong (CERN ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Carra, Federico (CERN) ; D'Andrea, Marco (CERN) ; Di Castro, Mario (CERN) ; Giacomel, Lorenzo (CERN) ; Hermes, Pascal (CERN) et al.
An important upgrade programme is planned for the collimation system of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in order to meet the challenges of the upcoming High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) project. A first stage of the HL-LHC upgrade was already deployed during the last LHC Long Shutdown, offering important improvements of the collimation cleaning, a significant reduction of the impedance contribution and better cleaning of collisional debris, in particular for ion-ion collisions. Operational performance of crystal collimation with 6.37 $Z$ TeV Pb ion beams at the LHC / D'Andrea, M (CERN) ; Aberle, O (CERN) ; Bruce, R (CERN) ; Butcher, M (CERN) ; Di Castro, M (CERN) ; Cai, R (CERN) ; Lamas, I (CERN) ; Masi, A (CERN) ; Mirarchi, D (CERN) ; Redaelli, S (CERN) et al.
The concept of crystal collimation relies on the use of bent crystals to coherently deflect positively charged particles with suitable impact conditions by trapping them in the potential well generated by adjacent crystalline planes. The resulting deflection is much higher than what can be achieved by multiple scattering on amorphous materials. [...]
