Photodesorption of Water Ices: Highlights from Recent Synchrotron Radiation Studies / Fillion, Jean-Hugues (Paris Observ.) ; Dupuy, Rémi (Paris Observ.) ; Féraud, Géraldine (Paris Observ.) ; Romanzin, Claire (ICM, Paris) ; Marie-Jeanne, Patrick (Paris Observ.) ; Jeseck, Pascal (Paris Observ.) ; Baglin, Vincent (CERN) ; Cimino, Roberto (LNF, Dafne Light) ; Michaut, Xavier (Paris Observ.) ; Bertin, Mathieu (Paris Observ.)
UV-X photodesorption of water ices, which is playing a role on the gas-to-ice ratio in a wide range of astrophysical environments, has also been extensively studied in the laboratory. In recent years, the SPICES setup coupled to several beamlines at the SOLEIL facility (France) has allowed the analysis of water photodesorption spectra (PSD) in the vacuum-UV (VUV) and soft X-ray range. Electronic excitations near the surface of water ice lead to the desorption of adsorbed molecules, through a so far debated mechanism. A systematic study of photon-induced indirect desorption, revealed by the spectral dependence of the desorption (7 to 13 eV), is conducted for Ar, Kr, N$_{2}$, and CO adsorbed on H$_{2}$O or D$_{2}$O amorphous ices. Vacuum-UV (VUV) photodesorption from water-rich ice mantles coating interstellar grains is known to play an important role in the gas-to-ice ratio in star- and planet-forming regions. Quantitative photodesorption yields from water ice are crucial for astrochemical models. [...]

The ability of a low secondary electron yield coating to mitigate detrimental electron cloud effects potentially affecting accelerators’ performances has been convincingly validated. The interference of such coatings with other properties required to accelerator constructive materials (i.e. [...]

The knowledge of material properties is an essential stepto design particle accelerators and High Energy Colliders.During operation of these machines, the walls of the vac-uum chambers are subjected to bombardment of photonsand electrons. The detrimental interactions may be followedby issues related to vacuum and beam instability. [...]

SEY from noble metals / Gonzalez, L A (Frascati) ; Angelucci, M (Frascati) ; Larciprete, R (Frascati) ; Cimino, R (Frascati)
The detailed study of the secondary electron yield of tech-nical surfaces for very low electron landing energies (LE-SEY) is a very important parameter to be taken into accountto ensure the correct operation of particle accelerators [1].Despite such interest, LE-SEY (0-30eV) curve has beenrarely addressed due to the intrinsic experimental complex-ity to control very low energy electrons. In this paper, wepresent an experimental SEY and LE-SEY study carried outon a number of materials of interest for multipacting andelectron cloud (e-cloud) mitigation. [...]
