The performance of electromagnetic calorimeter modules made of proton-irradiated PbWO(4) crystals has been studied in beam tests. The modules, similar to those used in the Endcaps of the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL), were formed from 5×5 matrices of PbWO(4) crystals, which had previously been exposed to 24 GeV protons up to integrated fluences between 2.1× 10(13) and 1.3× 10(14) cm(−)(2). Structural, mechanical and light yield characterisation of heat treated LYSO:Ce single crystals for medical imaging applications
/ Mengucci, P (Ancona, Politech. U. delle Marche) ; André, G (LLB, Saclay) ; Auffray, E (CERN) ; Barucca, G (Ancona, Politech. U. delle Marche) ; Cecchi, C (Perugia U.) ; Chipaux, R (IRFU, Saclay) ; Cousson, A (LLB, Saclay) ; Davì, F (Ancona, Politech. U. delle Marche) ; Di Vara, N (CERN) ; Rinaldi, D (Ancona, Politech. U. delle Marche) et al.
Five single crystals of cerium-doped lutetium yttrium oxyorthosilicate (LYSO:Ce) grown by the Czochralski method were submitted to structural characterisation by X-ray (XRD) and neutron (ND) diffraction, scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopy and energy dispersive microanalysis (EDS). The Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS), the Young Modulus (YM) and the Light Yield (LY) of the samples were also measured in order to correlate the mechanical and the optical behaviour of the crystals with the characteristics of their microstructure. Response of Inorganic Scintillators to Neutrons of 3 and 15 MeV Energy
/ Lucchini, M (CERN ; Milan Bicocca U.) ; Pauwels, K (CERN) ; Pizzichemi, M (Milan Bicocca U.) ; Chipaux, R (Saclay) ; Jacquot, F (CEA DAM) ; Mazue, H (CEA DAM) ; Wolff, H (CEA DAM) ; Lecoq, P (CERN) ; Auffray, E (CERN)
In the perspective of the development of future high energy physics experiments, homogeneous calorimeters based on inorganic scintillators can be considered for the detection of hadrons (e.g., calorimeter based on dual-readout technique). Although of high importance in the high energy physics framework as well as for homeland security applications, the response of these inorganic scintillators to neutrons has been only scarcely investigated. /CMS Electromagnetic Calorimeter Group
Ensuring the radiation hardness of PbWO4 crystals was one of the main priorities during the construction of the electromagnetic calorimeter of the CMS experiment at CERN. The production on an industrial scale of radiation hard crystals and their certification over a period of several years represented a difficult challenge both for CMS and for the crystal suppliers. The anticipated high sensitivity and the science goals of the next generation X-ray space missions, like the International X-ray Observatory or Simbol-X, rely on a low instrumental background, which in turn requires optimized shielding concepts. [...]

Commissioning and performance of the CMS pixel tracker with cosmic ray muons
/ CMS Collaboration
The pixel detector of the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment consists of three barrel layers and two disks for each endcap. The detector was installed in summer 2008, commissioned with charge injections, and operated in the 3.8 T magnetic field during cosmic ray data taking. [...]

Measurement of the muon stopping power in lead tungstate
/ CMS Collaboration
A large sample of cosmic ray events collected by the CMS detector is exploited to measure the specific energy loss of muons in the lead tungstate (PbWO$_4$) of the electromagnetic calorimeter. The measurement spans a momentum range from 5 GeV/$c$ to 1 TeV/$c$. [...]

Performance of CMS muon reconstruction in cosmic-ray events
/ CMS Collaboration
The performance of muon reconstruction in CMS is evaluated using a large data sample of cosmic-ray muons recorded in 2008. Efficiencies of various high-level trigger, identification, and reconstruction algorithms have been measured for a broad range of muon momenta, and were found to be in good agreement with expectations from Monte Carlo simulation. During autumn 2008, the Silicon Strip Tracker was operated with the full CMS experiment in a comprehensive test, in the presence of the 3.8 T magnetic field produced by the CMS superconducting solenoid. Cosmic ray muons were detected in the muon chambers and used to trigger the readout of all CMS sub-detectors. [...]
