Superconductors for fusion: a roadmap / Mitchell, Neil (Euratom, St. Paul Lez Durance) ; Zheng, Jinxing (Hefei, Inst. Plasma Phys.) ; Vorpahl, Christian (EFDA-CSU, Garching) ; Corato, Valentina (ENEA, Frascati) ; Sanabria, Charlie (Unlisted, US) ; Segal, Michael (Unlisted, US) ; Sorbom, Brandon (Unlisted, US) ; Slade, Robert (Unlisted, GB) ; Brittles, Greg (Unlisted, GB) ; Bateman, Rod (Unlisted, GB) et al.
With the first tokamak designed for full nuclear operation now well into final assembly (ITER), and a major new research tokamak starting commissioning (JT60SA), nuclear fusion is becoming a mainstream potential energy source for the future. A critical part of the viability of magnetic confinement for fusion is superconductor technology. [...]

Superconducting Detector Magnet for BabyIAXO / Bykovskiy, Nikolay (CERN) ; Dudarev, Alexey (CERN) ; Pais Da Silva, Helder (CERN) ; de Sousa, Patricia Borges (CERN) ; Mentink, Matthias (CERN) ; Ten Kate, Herman H J (CERN)
BabyIAXO, a 20 m-long telescope aiming at the search for solar axions, is planned since late 2017 as a smaller scale but fully functional demonstrator of the International Axion Observatory (IAXO). It essentially comprises a superconducting magnet, optics and X-ray detectors, installed on a Sun-tracking drive system providing rotation and tilting of the detector. [...]

Self-Protecting HTS Current Lead-Demonstration of a New Technology / Dudarev, Alexey (CERN) ; Blokker, Joris Willem (Delft Tech. U.) ; Bykovskiy, Nikolay (CERN) ; Mulder, Tim (CERN) ; Pais Da Silva, Helder F (CERN) ; ten Kate, Herman H J (CERN)
A straight forward solution to reduce the heat load of Current Leads to superconducting magnets operating at 4 K is the use of high temperature superconductors (HTS) thereby eliminating the ohmic heating at the range below 50–77 K. The heat input from the current leads is then determined by heat conduction in the HTS section only, leading to some factor 10 reduction in the heat load in comparison to fully normal conducting conventional leads. Axion search with BabyIAXO in view of IAXO / Abeln, A. (Kirchhoff Inst. Phys.) ; Altenmüller, K. (Zaragoza U.) ; Cuendis, S. Arguedas (CERN) ; Armengaud, E. (IRFU, Saclay) ; Attié, D. (IRFU, Saclay) ; Aune, S. (IRFU, Saclay) ; Basso, S. (Brera Observ.) ; Bergé, L. (IJCLab, Orsay) ; Biasuzzi, B. (IRFU, Saclay) ; De Sousa, P.T.C. Borges (CERN) et al.
Axions are a natural consequence of the Peccei-Quinn mechanism, the most compelling solution to the strong-CP problem. Similar axion-like particles (ALPs) also appear in a number of possible extensions of the Standard Model, notably in string theories. [...]

Mechanical Design and Analysis of the Baby-IAXO Magnet Cold Mass, Cryostat and Support System / Pais Da Silva, Helder (CERN) ; Bykovskiy, Nikolay (CERN) ; Borges de Sousa, Patricia (CERN) ; Dudarev, Alexey (CERN) ; Ten Kate, Herman H. J. (CERN)
According to the so-called Primakoff effect, axions and axion-like particles can transform into photons in the presence of a strong magnetic field. To continue the search for these hypothetical particles, a new helioscope called the International Axion Observatory IAXO, and its subscale but fully functional demonstrator Baby-IAXO, are being designed. Conceptual Design of BabyIAXO, the intermediate stage towards the International Axion Observatory / IAXO Collaboration
This article describes BabyIAXO, an intermediate experimental stage of the International Axion Observatory (IAXO), proposed to be sited at DESY. IAXO is a large-scale axion helioscope that will look for axions and axion-like particles (ALPs), produced in the Sun, with unprecedented sensitivity. [...]

Demonstration of engineering current density exceeding 1 kA mm$^{−2}$ in ultra-thin no-insulation, soldered coil windings using NbTi/Cu wires with CuNi cladding / Bykovskiy, N (CERN) ; Kaal, S (CERN ; Twente U., Enschede) ; Dudarev, A (CERN) ; Mentink, M (CERN) ; ten Kate, H H J (CERN ; Twente U., Enschede)
The no-insulation, or more precisely, controlled-resistance coil winding method, nowadays being exclusively used for high-temperature superconducting solenoids, has proven its effectiveness for improving quench protection. When considering low-temperature superconductor magnet technology, which is mostly focused on stability and training issues, controlled-resistance insulation windings are directly addressing these aspects as well. Quench protection of the BabyIAXO magnet / Bykovskiy, N (CERN) ; Dudarev, A (CERN) ; Silva, H (CERN) ; ten Kate, H H J (CERN)
BabyIAXO, a 20 m-long twin-bore helioscope aiming for search of axion like particles, is currently in the engineering design phase and its construction is to be completed within the next 4 years. In addition to X-ray detectors and focusing optics, the system is equipped with a 50 MJ magnet with a common coil layout, containing two 10 m-long NbTi flat racetrack coils cooled by a group of cryocoolers. Thermal analysis and cryogenics of the Baby-IAXO magnet / Silva, H F P (CERN) ; Dudarev, A (CERN) ; Bykovskiy, N (CERN) ; de Sousa, P Borges (CERN) ; ten Kate, H H J (CERN)
Baby-IAXO is a new helioscope, a demonstration version of the proposed full-size IAXO, the International Axions Observatory. It is currently under design and once installed it will search via the Primakoff effect for axions or axion-like particles (ALPs) originating in the Sun. [...]
