Performance of the Low Energy Ion Ring at CERN with lead ions in 2022
/ Alemany-Fernandez, Reyes (CERN) ; Frassier, Alexandre (CERN) ; Rey, Anthony (CERN) ; Wetton, Chris (CERN) ; Mutin, Christophe (CERN) ; Gamba, Davide (CERN) ; Bodart, Dominique (CERN) ; Carlier, Felix (CERN) ; Velotti, Francesco (CERN) ; Le Godec, Gilles (CERN) et al.
2022 has been a performance consolidation year for the Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR) at CERN that demonstrated its capability of delivering the target beam parameters required for high luminosity production in the LHC in a reproducible and reliable way. The main steps that have led to the high performance reach of this beam, together with the machine stability improvements deployed, are detailed in this paper..

Advancements in injection efficiency modelling for the Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR) at CERN

The performance of the Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR) at CERN is mainly determined by the number of charges extracted from the machine and transferred to the downstream chain of accelerators. While the required target of 9e10 charges has now been surpassed, a series of studies have been undertaken to further push the intensity reach of LEIR. [...]

Automated Intensity Optimisation Using Reinforcement Learning at LEIR
/ Madysa, Nico (CERN) ; Alemany-Fernández, Reyes (CERN) ; Biancacci, Nicolo (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Velotti, Francesco (CERN)
High intensities in the CERN Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR) are achieved by stacking up to seven consecutive multi-turn injections from Linac3. Two inclined septa combined with a collapsing horizontal orbit bump allow a 6-D phase space painting via a linearly ramped mean momentum along the Linac3 pulse and injection at high dispersion. [...]

To provide HL-LHC performance, the CERN LHC injector chain underwent a major upgrade during an almost 2-year-long shutdown. In the first half of 2021 the injectors were gradually re-started with the aim to reach at least pre-shutdown parameters for LHC as well as for fixed target beams. [...]

The High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) project will upgrade the LHC machine to allow operation with increased luminosity for the experiments. In order to achieve this goal, different operational parameters of the machine need to be pushed beyond the present design values, including the stored beam energy. [...]
