“LF-Monopix2” and “TJ-Monopix2” are the second generation of “Monopix” Depleted Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor prototypes fabricated in 150 nm and 180 nm CMOS processes, respectively. Both devices implement a fully functional column-drain read-out architecture at a reticle-size scale, but differ on the concept used for pixel design. [...]

Development and characterization of a DMAPS chip in TowerJazz 180 nm technology for high radiation environments
/ Bespin, Christian (Bonn U.) ; Berdalovic, Ivan (CERN ; Zagreb U.) ; Caicedo, Ivan (Bonn U.) ; Cardella, Roberto (CERN) ; Dingfelder, Jochen (Bonn U.) ; Flores, Leyre (CERN) ; Hemperek, Tomasz (Bonn U.) ; Krüger, Hans (Bonn U.) ; Kugathasan, Thanushan (CERN) ; Marin Tobon, Cesar (CERN) et al.
The increasing availability of commercial CMOS processes with high-resistivity wafers has fueled the R&D; of depleted monolithic active pixel sensors (DMAPS) for use in high energy physics experiments. One of these developments is a series of monolithic pixel detectors with column-drain readout architecture and small collection electrode allowing for low-power designs (TJ-Monopix). [...]

Development of the monolithic "MALTA" CMOS sensor for the ATLAS ITK outer pixel layer
/ Hiti, Bojan (Stefan Inst., Ljubljana) ; Argemi, Lluis Simon (Glasgow U.) ; Tortajada, Ignacio Asensi (CERN) ; Berdalović, Ivan (CERN) ; Sierra, Ivan Caicedo (Bonn U.) ; Cardella, Roberto (CERN) ; Dachs, Florian (CERN) ; Dao, Valerio (CERN) ; Plaja, Nuria Egidos (CERN) ; Gorišek, Andrej (Stefan Inst., Ljubljana) et al.
Depleted Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (DMAPS) are an option for the outermost layer of the upgraded ATLAS ITk Pixel Detector at the CERN LHC. Two large size DMAPS named TJ MALTA and TJ Monopix were produced in the TowerJazz 180 nm CMOS imaging process in a small collection electrode design. [...]

MALTA: a CMOS pixel sensor with asynchronous readout for the ATLAS High-Luminosity upgrade
/ Berdalovic, Ivan (CERN ; U. Zagreb (main)) ; Argemi, Lluis Simon (Glasgow U.) ; Cardella, Roberto (CERN) ; Dachs, Florian (CERN) ; Dao, Valerio (CERN) ; Flores Sanz de Acedo, Leyre (CERN) ; Hemperek, Tomasz (Bonn U.) ; Hiti, Bojan (Stefan Inst., Ljubljana) ; Kugathasan, Thanushan (CERN) ; Marin Tobon, Cesar Augusto (CERN) et al.
Radiation hard silicon sensors are required for the upgrade of the ATLAS tracking detector for the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) at CERN. A process modification in a standard 0.18 μm CMOS imaging technology combines small, low-capacitance electrodes (~2 fF for the sensor) with a fully depleted active sensor volume [...]

The upgrade of the ATLAS tracking detector for the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider at CERN requires the development of novel radiation hard silicon sensor technologies. For the development of depleted CMOS sensors for ATLAS we combined small electrodes with minimal capacitance and advanced processing for fully depleted active sensor volume to achieve radiation hard CMOS sensors in line with ATLAS ITk specifications. The ATLAS experiment at CERN plans to upgrade its Inner Tracking System for the High-Luminosity LHC in 2026. After the ALPIDE monolithic sensor for the ALICE ITS was successfully implemented in a 180 nm CMOS Imaging Sensor technology, the process was modified to combine full sensor depletion with a low sensor capacitance (≈ 2.5fF), for increased radiation tolerance and low analog power consumption.
