New Beam Position Monitors for the CERN LINAC3 to LEIR Ion Beam Transfer Line
/ Søby, Lars (CERN) ; Baud, Guillaume (CERN) ; Bozzolan, Michele (CERN) ; Scrivens, Richard (CERN)
The ion injection line into the CERN Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR) has recently been equipped with nine, new, electrostatic Beam Position Monitors (BPMs) in order to measure and optimize the trajectory of the low intensity ion beams coming from LINAC3. In this paper, we describe the design of the BPM, the low noise charge amplifier mounted directly on the BPM, and the digital acquisition system. [...]

Transverse Coupling Measurements With High Intensity Beams Using Driven Oscillations
/ Persson, Tobias (CERN) ; Baud, Guillaume (CERN) ; Buffat, Xavier (CERN) ; Coello de Portugal, Jaime Maria (CERN) ; Fol, Elena (CERN) ; Fuchsberger, Kajetan (CERN) ; Gabriel, Mathieu (CERN) ; Gąsior, Marek (CERN) ; Giovannozzi, Massimo (CERN) ; Hemelsoet, Georges-Henry (CERN) et al.
Transverse coupling has been linked to instabilities and reduction in dynamic aperture and is hence a crucial parameter to control in the LHC. In this article we describe the development to use driven oscillations to measure the transverse coupling with high intensity beams. [...]

In 2017 the CERN Low Energy Ion Ring demonstrated once more the feasibility of injecting, accumulating, cooling and accelerating a new nuclei, $^{129}$Xe${39+}$. The operation of this new ion species started at the beginning of March with the start up of the xenon ion source and the Linac3. [...]

The 2016 Proton-Nucleus Run of the LHC

For five of the LHC experiments the second p-Pb collision run planned in 2016 offered the opportunity to answer a range of important physics questions arising from the surprise discoveries (e.g., flow-like collective phenomena in small systems) made in earlier Pb-Pb, p-Pb and p-p runs. However the diversity of the physics and their respective capabilities led them to request very different operating conditions, in terms of collision energy, luminosity and pile-up. [...]

Final implementation, commissioning, and performance of embedded collimator beam position monitors in the Large Hadron Collider
/ Valentino, Gianluca (CERN ; Malta U.) ; Baud, Guillaume (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Gasior, Marek (CERN) ; Mereghetti, Alessio (CERN) ; Mirarchi, Daniele (CERN) ; Olexa, Jakub (CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Salvachua, Belen (CERN) ; Valloni, Alessandra (CERN) et al.
During Long Shutdown 1, 18 Large Hadron Collider (LHC) collimators were replaced with a new design, in which beam position monitor (BPM) pick-up buttons are embedded in the collimator jaws. The BPMs provide a direct measurement of the beam orbit at the collimators, and therefore can be used to align the collimators more quickly than using the standard technique which relies on feedback from beam losses. Upgraded Control System for LHC Beam-Based Collimator Alignment

In the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), over 100 movable collimators are connected to a three-tier control system which moves them to the required settings throughout the operational cycle from injection to collision energy. A dedicated control system was developed to align the collimators to the beam during machine commissioning periods and hence determine operational settings for the active run. [...]
