When they found Him on the other side of the sea
This phrase refers to the crowd that had been following Jesus after witnessing the miracle of the feeding of the 5,000. The "other side of the sea" indicates the Sea of Galilee, a significant location in Jesus' ministry. This body of water is central to many of His miracles and teachings. The crowd's pursuit of Jesus across the sea demonstrates their eagerness to see more signs and wonders, reflecting a common theme in the Gospels where people seek Jesus for physical needs rather than spiritual truths.

they asked Him, “Rabbi, when did You get here?”
The term "Rabbi" is a title of respect, acknowledging Jesus as a teacher. This reflects the Jewish custom of addressing those who were considered learned in the Scriptures. The question "when did You get here?" reveals the crowd's curiosity and perhaps confusion about how Jesus managed to arrive at the location without them noticing. This follows the miraculous event where Jesus walked on water, an act that the crowd was unaware of. Their question underscores a recurring theme in the Gospels: the misunderstanding of Jesus' true nature and mission. The crowd's focus on the timing of His arrival rather than the significance of His presence highlights their limited understanding of His divine identity.

Persons / Places / Events
1. Jesus
Central figure in this passage, known as the Messiah and the Son of God. He had just performed the miracle of feeding the 5,000 and walked on water.

2. The Crowd
The people who had been fed by Jesus and were seeking Him out, likely motivated by the miraculous signs and the physical provision they had received.

3. The Sea of Galilee
The body of water Jesus crossed, which is significant for its frequent mention in the Gospels as a site of Jesus' ministry and miracles.

4. Capernaum
The town where the crowd found Jesus, often considered His "home base" during His Galilean ministry.

5. Rabbi
A title of respect meaning "teacher," which the crowd used to address Jesus, acknowledging His authority and wisdom.
Teaching Points
Seek Spiritual Nourishment
Jesus challenges us to prioritize spiritual growth and eternal truths over temporary, physical needs. Reflect on how you can seek Jesus for spiritual sustenance in your daily life.

Recognize Jesus' Authority
The crowd addressed Jesus as "Rabbi," acknowledging His authority. Consider how you can recognize and submit to Jesus' authority in your own life.

Pursue Jesus with Right Motives
The crowd sought Jesus for more miracles and physical provision. Evaluate your motives in seeking Jesus—are they for personal gain or genuine relationship?

Trust in Jesus' Provision
Just as Jesus provided for the crowd, He promises to meet our needs. Trust in His provision, both physically and spiritually.

Understand the Signs
Jesus' miracles were signs pointing to His divine nature and mission. Reflect on how you can see and understand the signs of Jesus' work in your life today.(25) Rabbi, when camest thou hither?--This discourse took place in the synagogue at Capernaum (John 6:59). They are amazed to find Him here. When and how could He have come? He had not gone in the boat with the disciples, and no other boats had crossed but those in which they themselves came. On the title Rabbi, see Note on John 1:38.

Verse 25. - When they had found him on the other side of the sea (other side than that on which the miracle took place, and yet near Capernaum. This contradicts the exposition which would make the site of the feeding to be on the Western side), they said unto him, Rabbi, when earnest thou? and how happens it that thou art here? The πότε ω΅δε γέγονας; is difficult to translate. The when? practically includes the how? also. The difficulty lay in the time. They were sure that Jesus had not started before the disciples, and they knew that there was no method by which the lake itself would have been available, and they want explanation. The news of his crossing the water after some fashion that would ally him to Moses, Joshua, Elijah, may easily have got disseminated, one report or another being rapidly circulated.
