New Work: Videos + Signage for the LCBO

My favourite figure in this illustration is the guy on the left with the checked jacket. I based it on a snazzy one I found on the J crew website.

I've just completed a large project for the LCBO as part of their newly released redesign. I created illustrations for signage, flyers + 3 videos which you can view on their website + on Vimeo.
Above are 4 screen captures from the videos.

I worked with a great group at Blammo Worldwide (Don't you love that name Blammo?!) including Creative Director Andrew Simon, Senior Art Director Grant Cleland + VP Director of Client Services Kristin Vekteris. The animation of the video was done by the lovely Steve McGregor + his great group at Poster Boy who worked many late nights to meet the April 30th deadline!

Many thanks to Blammo + the LCBO for such a wonderful gig.

A-mazing: 'Outside the box' by Joseph Pelling.

How adorable are these espresso sipping characters?

I like to think "Outside the box"

Animated short film Outside the box by UK based Joseph Pelling.
One of the best things I've ever seen.
Love the illustration, animation and writing.

Can we get any cuter?: Virgin America's Safety Video

Cutest thing I've seen in a long time: Virgin America's Safety Video animated by Gordon Clark. Conceived and directed by Anomaly. Innovative and adorable.

Hillman Curtis: Pentagram film

Watched Hillman Curtis' short film on the history of Pentagram today.
It's narrated by Paula Scher speaking very quickly.
(I think Hillman actually sped up the tape) Her zippy fast voice over combined with quickie diagrams jetting about the screen somehow made the entire history seem terribly funny.

Inspiration: James Gulliver Hancock

James Gulliver Hancock: artist, illustrator, and animater inspires me to loosen up.
His shapes are very Buckminster Fullerish.
Above an image from one of his animated videos for Lenka.

Inspiration: I met the Walrus

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmR0V6s3NKk

Back in 1969, 14-year-old Beatles fan Jerry Levitan snuck into John Lennon's hotel room in Toronto. Armed with a reel-to-reel tape deck, Levitan convinced Lennon to do an interview. 38 years later, director Josh Raskin created an animated film using Levitan's original interview recording.

Written directed and animated by Josh Raskin
Pen illustrations by James Braithwaite
Computer illustration by Alex Kurina

Love the combination of Barithwaite's 'yellow submarine-ish'pen + ink drawing with victorian ad cuts, newspaper articles and photographs.
Also love how Raskin animates the character of Jerry Levitan solely by opening his mouth like an old fashioned marionette.
A lesson in less is more.
Beautiful and witty.

Animation of my typewriter

Marc Whiteway and I have begun collaborating on some animations using my illustrations and his flash skills.
Here's the first one.
