Shop With Your Heart to Help Farm Animals

We all care about animals but sometimes we don’t always think about the animals that help produce our food - especially during the holiday season. So, this season the ASPCA, Food Chain Workers Alliance, GRACE Communications Foundation, and the Natural Resource Defense Council are working hard to arm consumers with the information they need before they head to the grocery store for holiday shopping. And they are focusing on farm animal welfare by doing so. Here are some tips for being a savvy consumer while supporting humane practices!

Don’t Be Duped - Marketing schemes can play a huge factor when it comes to food purchases. So often consumers want to buy humanely-raised food, but labels can be meaningless or downright misleading at times! What’s the difference between “all-natural” or “free-range” or “cage-free”? That’s why the ASPCA has produced guides like this one to help consumers distinguish what matters.

Don’t Waste the Food You Have - Your family can reduce your holiday grocery bill - and food waste - by serving the right portion sizes and storing leftovers properly. A Good Groceries Guide will help you understand how all these elements fit together to help people, animals, and ultimately the planet

Buy Locally - Shopping locally, like from your local farmer’s market or CSA, can keep your shopping dollars in your local area and also decrease the need for factory-farmed foods. Check out the ASPCA guide for shopping locally and how to begin conversations with local producers in your area.

Shop With Your Heart - At the ASPCA Shop With Your Heart website you’ll find an abundance of options for healthy and humane food choices, along with tips on how to begin to implement them in your own family.

As consumers we have all the power to shift the focus of major companies and corporations. And that begins with understanding how our shopping choices can directly affect the lives of the animals that help bring us the meals we serve our family.

Enter for your chance to win some fun items from the ASPCA!

zulily's Interactive Book Fair - Holiday Give-Back!

The start of the holidays marks the season for giving. This season, zulily, the online retailer obsessed with bringing special finds to its customers every day, is teaming up exclusively with Penguin Random House to help those impacted by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria.

zulily is kicking off National Family Literacy Month this November with its first-ever interactive book fair, running now through December 10. Six sales events will feature a curated selection of children’s books, and each book purchased will trigger a donation from Penguin Random House to First Book. First Book, a nonprofit social enterprise that provides new books and other essentials to children in need, is aiding teachers, students and schools affected by the recent hurricanes.

“We recognize that many of our customers know someone or have been personally affected by the devastation incurred from the hurricanes this year,” said Kerry Gibson-Morris, VP of Home, Hardlines & Licensing at zulily. “We understand that these major storms can disrupt children’s learning and academic performance, and through our partnership with Penguin Random House and support of First Book, we hope we can provide children, teachers and schools the tools to succeed during these challenging recovery times.”

“Penguin Random House is committed to fostering a universal passion for reading and providing access to books in the communities and schools of parents and children who need them most. Through our partnership with zulily we’re able to expand and extend our ongoing relief efforts through our longtime partner, First Book, by providing up to 25,000 books during this important time of need,” said Jaci Updike, President of Sales of Penguin Random House U.S.

“Educators have shared heart-breaking stories of students, families and fellow teachers who have lost their homes and belongings, as well as entire school libraries now destroyed by flooding or mold,” said Kyle Zimmer, president and CEO of First Book.  “The support of zulily, zulily’s customers and Penguin Random House will bring treasured books to these communities, enabling educators to restore learning in their classrooms, and providing a lifeline of hopes and dreams for students and their families.  It means the world to all of us.”

Customers can shop the ongoing interactive book fair via the “Buy One, Give One” badge highlighted on the website and on featured books found in select events. Each week zulily fans can visit zulily’s owned social channels to activate a call to action, through comments or shares to spark the “Give One” donation from Penguin Random House to First Book. For example, a donation will be made when fans comment on zulily’s Facebook post about their favorite childhood stories.

To help those affected by the hurricanes visit zulily.com, and zulily’s social pages: FacebookTwitterInstagram and Pinterest.

New Accessory Line Benefiting ALZ Research

Rivet Revolution – creator of simple, hand-crafted bracelets with a mission: to end Alzheimer’s.

We started the Revolution in the summer of 2016 with three goals: to fund research and support for caregivers, to empower the networks of families and friends who have been affected by Alzheimer’s and to have a blast doing so. Designed to be worn every day and inspired by the strong and permanent bond of the rivet, Rivet Revolution bracelets aim to spark conversations, raise awareness and form connections amongst those impacted by Alzheimer’s.

Join the Revolution & help us put an end to Alzheimers!

Why it matters:
One in 10 people age 65 and older (10 percent) has Alzheimer's dementia.
Almost two-thirds of Americans with Alzheimer's are women.
Alzheimer’s Disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States.
Every 66 seconds someone in the United States develops the disease.
More than 44 million people worldwide suffer from Alzheimer’s.

Rivet Revolution is proud to partner with these rockstar organizations. $10 from each bracelet sold will benefit:

Founded in 2012, Part the Cloud® has raised over $17 million for Alzheimer’s research. With 100 percent of the proceeds from Part the Cloud going directly to the Alzheimer’s Association® research efforts, Part the Cloud is helping to support some of the most innovative research in Alzheimer’s prevention. As a result of this increase in funding, the Alzheimer’s Association has awarded 17 research awards since January 2013.

Hilarity for Charity® (HFC) is a movement led by Seth Rogen and Lauren Miller Rogen to inspire change and raise awareness of Alzheimer’s disease among the millennial generation. For almost five years, their successful Los Angeles Variety Show has entertained young, hip professionals through evenings filled with music and comedy while creating the next generation of Alzheimer’s advocates. Since its inception, Hilarity for Charity has raised more than $6.5 million to support these efforts and established themselves as a force in the Alzheimer’s and comedy communities. Monies raised through Hilarity for Charity benefit families struggling with Alzheimer’s care, increase support groups nationwide, and fund cutting edge research.

The Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement™, founded by Maria Shriver, is a global alliance of individuals, organizations, researchers, foundations, influencers and industry leaders committed to finding out why Alzheimer’s discriminates against women. WAM believes that by answering the question of why women are disproportionately affected by Alzheimer’s, we will unlock the other mysteries surrounding this mind-blowing disease and that will lead to a cure for all.

My Thoughts:

Rivet Revolution combines two of my favorite things, stones and raising funds for honorable causes. Knowing that this business gave back to Alzheimer's research made me ecstatic to review this line. I was able to receive the beautiful Amethyst bracelet. As the website shares: "Amethyst is a calming stone that promotes healing, balance and peace. Each stretch bracelet is unique with subtle variations in color, texture and size of the gemstone beads".

The coloring of my bracelet was gorgeous! Each stone had a mixture of hues of purple in it. It also fit just right! I love how the website allows you to choose a size too. The Small-Medium is up to 6 ½ inches and fits most women and teenagers. The Medium-Large is up to 7 ¼ inches and fits most men. No matter what, Rivet Revolution has a size and stone for you to be looking stylish, feeling good, while also supporting the raising of awareness and research for Alzheimer's. I love the small charm on the bracelet as well, signifying the support of the cause.

If you are looking for a beautiful new addition to your accessory collection that allows you to giving back, I urge you to join the revolution with Rivet to end Alzheimer's!

Why I’m Going to #LightItUpBlue for Understanding and Acceptance

Since April is World Autism Month, I’ve decided to #LightItUpBlue with Autism Speaks to increase understanding and awareness of autism. This is an issue that has touched the hearts of many people I care about. It’s highly likely that you know someone with autism too since the CDC estimates autism’s prevalence as 1 in every 68 children in the United States.

Autism refers to a range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication, as well as by unique strengths and differences. We now know that there is not one autism but many types, caused by different combinations of genetic and environmental influences.

Autism’s most obvious signs tend to appear between 2 and 3 years of age. In some cases, it can be diagnosed as early as 18 months. Autism Speaks encourages parents with concerns to seek evaluation without delay, as early intervention can improve outcomes.

The “Light It Up Blue” campaign is about more than awareness -- it is about increasing understanding and acceptance of autism.  This includes advocacy and support for people across the entire spectrum throughout their lives. It also includes advancing research into personalized treatments for autism and related conditions.  I encourage you test your understanding of autism by taking this quiz!

Certain medical and mental health issues frequently accompany autism. They include GI disorders, seizures, sleep disturbances, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety and phobias.

You can help make a difference too by taking the Light It Up Blue Quiz to see how much you know about autism. If you’re moved to do so after visiting AutismSpeaks.org, please show your support for and understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with autism by sharing a photo to #LightItUpBlue for Autism Awareness Month too. Also, check out Autism Speaks’ nationwide calendar of autism-friendly friendly events and activities in April.

Celebrate National Jump in Muddy Puddles Day - the Peppa Pig Way!

The Muddy Puddles Project is a fundraising platform for the Ty Louis Campbell (TLC) Foundation, a certified 501(c)(3) that funds pediatric cancer research. The project was inspired by Ty, a little boy who loved Peppa Pig and dreamed of jumping in muddy puddles when his cancer was cured. Since his passing, The Muddy Puddles Project has grown by leaps and bounds with families all across the country joining the mission. To bring more awareness to the cause, kids and families as well as schools nationwide host their own “Welly Walks” and take part in the charity’s Mess Fest events to honor all children who are battling cancer and unable to enjoy such simple pleasures of childhood.

You can get join the The Muddy Puddles Project and get in on the “fun”-draising by hosting your own Welly Walk!   What is a Welly Walk? It’s as simple as it sounds: an organized stroll outside – rain or shine! – in your favorite pair of wellies (rain boots). As Peppa Pig’s Mummy Pig wisely says, “If you jump in muddy puddles, you must wear your boots.”

Additionally, they are  kicking off a special “Muddy Puddle Jump Challenge” on social media! They’re asking Peppa fans from coast-to-coast to post photos and videos of themselves jumping in a “muddy puddle” – just like Peppa and her family love to do! – to show their support for the charity and this special day. You can share a photo and/or video on your social pages in April with the hashtag #PeppaMuddyPuddleChallenge.

You can find more information on the official Peppa Pig website: http://www.peppapig.com/grown-ups/charity.
