this week, an eclectic outing from star dutduean dara! hailing from khon kaen, dutduean got her start when her uncle, musician prasit chamnanphrai of silver sand, petitioned her parents to let her do a recording with him at azona records. she then moved to bangkok and got a regular spot singing at "papa café" on vibhavadi rangsit road, gaining quite a following. thereafter, she was courted by a number of labels and frequently jumped between them, as well as releasing her own records independently. to me she's one of those artists who straddle the (admittedly often nebulous) boundaries of city and country.. while primarily remembered as a luk thung singer, this record features new takes on classic tunes penned by luk krung (and earlier thai sakon) luminaries like uea sunthonsanan, kaeo atchariyakun and narot thawonbut, sanga aramphi, chali intharawichit, sukhon phonphirun, a. kawi sattakowit, kamon thapkhanlai (as well as the more country-ish phaibun butkhan). also of interest is that the music here has, to my ear, a distinctly "chinese" sound, at least via the instrumentation.. unfortunately, the producer/arranger of the session is not credited. i don't think that any of the melodies are based off chinese originals, but if you know otherwise, please correct me. and most importantly.. enjoy!

happy new year! today, we've got some smooth sounds from mr. thanin intharathep! thanin is from samut sakhon, just outside of bangkok, and started out as a champion of local singing contests. he was discovered by pop impressario payong mukda, who got him in with suthep wongkhamhaeng's "suthep show" troupe. often billed as thailand's frank sinatra, thanin brought a young, attractive face to the romantic, jazz-tinged ballads of luk krung, and is still a favorite among old bangkokians. this cassette features thanin's take on a number of classic chinese pop melodies (mostly ones made famous by deng li jun a.k.a. teresa teng).. the first half is a bit slow, but there are some great disco numbers towards the end. enjoy!

happy lunar new year! in celebration, here's some "modern chinese music" from thailand! to be honest, i'm not 100% sure that this cassette is actually by singapore's the stylers, but i'm reasonably certain; it was part of a series in which every other volume is credited to them, so i'm just deducing. plus it sounds like them! with a mix of chinese instruments (erhu, yangqin, various flutes) and "modern" elements like electric guitar and synthesizer, the band runs through a set of instrumentals in typical stylers' style. the animal noises on the first track are especially pertinent, this being the year of the horse! enjoy it!!

so bangkok is going a bit china-crazy as it gears up to celebrate the 2nd of its 3 new years (the gregorian new year back in january, chinese lunar new year, and thai solar new year, songkran, in april). chinese culture is a big influence in bangkok.. by some estimates, nearly half of native bangkokians have some chinese ancestry. for the past week, all around the city people have been hanging red lanterns, setting off firecrackers, burning joss paper, eating chinese food & candy. in the spirit of the festivities, i thought i'd share this great old sino-thai musical comedy album. the jokes are in a mix of thai and teochew dialect, worked around some classic chinese songs. hope you enjoy! and 新年快樂!
