The Mandy Bag - FREE PDF pattern

Mad Quilter's
Mandy Bag

Designed for storing an iphone with ease!

I designed this bag as a gift for a very generous lady who sent me a Sure Fit Kit that I have constantly been outbid on!
Her name is Mandy and she's a mum to 8 and a member of the forum I belong to Crafty Mamas.
The ladies on this forum are wonderful, supportive, generous and inspirational.

READ ALL THE WAY TO THE BOTTOM SO YOU UNDERSTAND HOW THIS BAG IS CONSTRUCTED!
IT'S A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT!!

Printing the pattern.
Make sure you don't scale the pattern.
There are two pattern pieces. The bag body and the flap.
I have drawn only half. You can cut a pattern piece of the full pattern by placing the pattern on the fold of a piece of a4 paper. Do this with the flap and the body.

Fabric Requirements
50cm cut of 110cm lining fabric I used homespun
A fat quarter for the bag outer.

Cutting

Strap is cut the length of the fabric 110cm by 4cm.
Cut 2 of bag body from fabric
Cut 6 of bag body from lining
Cut 4 of bag body from iron on pellon ( trim these by 1 cm all the way around)
Cut 2 of bag flap from Lining
Cut 1 of bag flap from iron on pellon (Trim around the curve by 1cm)

Altogether you have:
8 bag body pieces, 2 flaps out of fabric.
4 body pieces and 1 flap from pellon, trimmed by 1cm. This is so there isn't too much bulk in the seams.

Preparing the strap

Iron the strap in half to mark the center with a crease.
Open it out again and iron the sides into the middle.

Fold the strap in half and press.
Sew along the open edge of the strap to close it.
Put the strap aside for later.

Preparing the Flap

Place the flap pieces right side together.
Iron on the Pellon to the top piece
Sew around the curved edge of the flap leaving the top open.
Clip the curve.

Turn the flap to the right side.
Top stitch 6mm from the edge along the curved sides.

Constructing the bag

Baste the bag flap to one of the outer fabric pieces.
Matching the center of the bag body and the flap.

Place lining pieces and fabric pieces right sides together.
And stitch along the top.

Position the handles on the right side one of the remaining lining pieces.
They are positioned 3cms from each side. Baste the straps into place.
Place and other lining piece right sides together and sew across the top.
Catching the straps in the seam.

Now do the same without catching straps or the flap for the remaining bag pieces so you end up with four pieces like in the photo above.

Now iron on the pellon to the wrong side of each piece as in the photo above.

Fold along the seam line and press well with the iron.

Sew all the way around 6mm from the edge. This holds the pieces together for the next step.

The four pieces will now look like the photo above.

Making the Internal Pocket for your iphone (or any mobile)

Take the two pieces that are made up of lining only.
These are the bag inner pieces. One has the straps attached.
Place them on top of each other and mark with tailors chalk a guide line for the pocket.
Mine is 15 cm deep and just inside where the straps sit.
Sew the pocket. Starting at the top sew down 15cms then across and up the other side.
Make sure you reverse back and forth at the beginning and end to reinforce the opening.
Refer to photo above as a guide.

Next fold up the top inner bag piece and pin in out of the way.

Place a outer bag piece on top of the folded inner bag piece.
With the outer fabric placed down as shown in the photo above.

Pin into place.

With a 1 cm seam allowance sew around the sides of the bag, leaving the top open.
Trim and clip the curves.

Turn the bag out. Take the pins out of the inner bag piece.
That's one side now we need to do the other.

Fold the outer bag piece into the middle and pin.
Now as before. Place a bag outer piece right side down on top of the folded piece.

Pin it into place.
Sew with a 1 cm seam allowance around the curved edge leaving the top open.
Clip the corners and turn to the right side.

Press the bag with an iron.

Sew 1cm from the edge around the curved body of the bag.
This will encase the raw edges inside the bag.
Do this on both bag pockets.

Add a snap to the bag flap and body.
If you prefer you can sew a button hole to the flap and sew a button to the bag.
In the position illustrated in the photo above.
