Mauritius ~ Aapravasi Ghat - UNESCO ~

... Great views of an important historical site that served as an immigration depot... Aapravasi Ghat was the first place chosen by the British Government in 1834 for the "great experiment" in the of use of "free" labour to replace slaves... therefore it is a symbol of Mauritian identity since the ancestors of more than 70% of today’s local population arrived on the island through this immigration depot... only 3 structures of the original site remain... it includes sheds for immigrants, quarters for officers and a hospital... it is the most important surviving manifestation of the indentured labour system from the 19th and 20th centuries... Big Thanks Prashanth! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Aapravasi Ghat is located on the Bay of Trou Fanfaronright in Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius.

Between 1834 and 1920, almost half a million indentured labourers arrived from India at Aapravasi Ghat to work in the sugar plantations of Mauritius, or to be transferred to Reunion Island, Australia, southern and eastern Africa or the Caribbean. After the end of the indentured labour system in the 1920s, parts of the depot were gradually destroyed by the government and by cyclone Carol in 1960

In 2006, the Aapravasi Ghat became the first indenture site in the world to be inscribed on UNESCO's famous list of World Heritage Sites.

MAURITIUS ~ Île des Deux Cocos - Blue Bay Marine National Park ~

.... Mauritius is a tropical island paradise🌞 at the gates of Africa... a stunning view of one the nearly hundred tiny islets and rocks scattered around the coast of the Island... a little piece of heaven in the Indian Ocean🥥🥥... on the south of this island resort is the dramatic ocean an ever-changing spectacle of waves pounding against the coral reef... to the north, tranquil, sandy white beaches border Blue Bay Marine Reserve, one of the most stunning spots for snorkeling in all of Mauritius... this completely charming private island is also a place steeped in history... the Villa, built in the 1920s by the British Governor of Mauritius, Sir Hesketh Bell, has been completely restored to its original glory... today the island is very popular for its excursions... a perfect holiday destination for chasing away the winter blues✈️... maybe just a bit to pricey for me😉... Thanks a lot Huyng Chen!ヽ(ヅ)ノ

Île des deux Cocos is located off the southern coast of Grand Port and named after the two abandoned coconut plantations it houses. The plantations were set up by the French, but were abandoned after crops were damaged during a lengthy storm in the 18thC.

Mauritius is an African Island Country in the Indian Ocean located  1,700km away from the African mainland. Together with Réunion and Rodrigues, it constitutes the Mascarene Islands. The capital and largest city is Port Louis.

The Blue Bay Marine Park, located in the South East of Mauritius was proclaimed National Park under the Wildlife and National Parks in 1997 and extends over an area of 353 hectares (3.5 km2). The marine park is renowned for its remarkable coral garden, which harbours hundreds of varieties of corals and its abundant fauna.

MAURITIUS ~ Le Morne Cultural Landscape - UNESCO ~

...A great African island view situated in the Indian Ocean with its most striking feature... the majestic monolithic mountain... it is known for its importance as a former shelter of runaway slaves and a symbol of resistance to slavery... and also an excellent wind- and kite-surfing destination... Thanks a lot Roshan!! ヽ(ヅ)ノ

The Le Morne peninsula at the extreme southwestern point of Mauritius is dominated by the enormous, steep-sided basalt mountain of Le Morne Brabant, whose flat summit plateau rises some 556 metres above sea level.

Le Morne cultural landscape found in the southwest of Mauritius is a beautiful and historically rich mountain commonly referred to as “the wild South“. This hammerhead shark mountain formed refuge for slaves who escape from their masters in the 18th and 19th centuries. The escaped slaves formed small settlements in the caves and on the summit of Le Morne. The place is full of nice viewpoints over the west coast of the island and over the of the island. The oral traditions associated with the maroons, have made Le Morne a symbol of the slaves’ fight for freedom, their suffering and their sacrifice, all of which have relevance to the countries from which the slaves came from- the African mainland, Madagascar, India, and South-east Asia.

Le Morne has been inscribed on the World Heritage List of UNESCO on July 10, 2008 and is considered as Mauritius’ Cultural Landscape.

The capital and largest city is Port Louis.

MAURITIUS

Yippieeee....A card from an amazing, wonderful island. It is certainly one of the "Hard-To-Get countries" and my second written and stamped card ever from Mauritius!! It is great especially with the view of the Dodo:
The island of Mauritius is renowned for having been the only known home of the dodo. First sighted by Europeans around 1600 on Mauritius, this bird was an easy prey to settlers due to its weight and inability to fly. It became extinct less than eighty years later.
Love the stamps too...

Mauritius is situated in the warm and crystal clear Indian Ocean, to the east of the island of Madagascar, which itself, lies off the southeast of Africa near Mozambique.
