Being able to describe creativity and creative processes is important for developing future designers. While much research has been undertaken describing creativity in design, there is very little investigating how creativity and creative thinking varies across disciplines. A coding scheme involving six separate codes was developed initially from the literature, refined and then used to describe how creativity and creative thinking was apparent in the DTRS 10 datasets of Junior Industrial Design, Graduate Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, Choreography and Entrepreneurship. Based on this analysis, conclusions on how creativity and creative thinking varied across the datasets were also reached. It was found that while all datasets analyzed included Process, Product and Press codes, how these were identified in the data varied. The three Personal codes were only identified in three of the datasets. This research has implications for investigating how to develop creativity and creative thinking skills in all designers.

Many studies have previously pointed differentcreativity blockers and the challenges of enhancing creativity in engineering education. However, there has been limited study onthe relation of product performance (functionality) and product creativity in an engineering design education context. The purposeof this research is to ask how focus on product performance affect product creativity during the engineering design process. Weseek to better understand the different levels of emphasis on performance and creativity during the engineering design process andtheir mutual relationship. To address this, a qualitative investigation was adopted in two engineering disciplines—one traditional inmechanical engineering and one relatively new in product design engineering. The main data collection methods were classroomobservations and interviews with the students and instructors. 8 instructors and 8 students were interviewed. Learning materials ofeach studied unit such as unit outlines, project briefs and assessment rubrics were also analysed allowing for triangulation to beachieved. The findings show that the excessive focus on product performance during the engineering design process trivialises anddiminishes the role of creativity. To enhance creativity in engineering education this study advocates challenging students withopen-ended design problems, valuing the design process in addition to the design product, and allowing assessment for creativity;not purely performance. Our findings indicate that in addition to product performance, engineering instructors should emphasiseproduct creativity in engineering design problem solving process. Future work is needed to understand the applicability of ourresults.

Using a self-study methodology, two university educators attempted to collaborate with ChatGPT to create course materials targeted at higher education design students, before reflecting on its strengths and weaknesses during the process. Contextualising ChatGPT as the latest acute example of digital disruptors that design practices and processes have faced, the authors evaluated its current and potential threats and opportunities for the creation of design-focused learning content. The authors found that ChatGPT was a competent partner with regard to saving time, structuring textual content and documentation, and as a brainstorming tool. However, ChatGPT’s weaknesses included content generation that was often generic, usually requiring much human prompting, cajoling, and manual editing to produce desirable outcomes. Overall, ChatGPT was...

One of the primary aims of this team was to change the mindset of engineering academics to deliver a curriculum that produced More Innovative Design-Abled Students and Staff (MIDAS). To model what an inspiring pedagogy might look like, a set of short, intensive, summer school offerings were designed and delivered. These ‘MIDAS Summer Studios’ aimed to strategically shift the culture of education and to revolutionise how students learn engineering and information technology. In order to confirm that each of the MIDAS Summer Studios and their studio leaders delivered a calibrated student learning experience, a series of training workshops were delivered to ensure the language used by studio facilitators remained consistent. During these workshops, the participants were encouraged to adopt some values and principles. This study re...

Researchers, academics, educators, and engineering organisations all agree that further improvement is necessary in training methods for fostering creativity in engineering education. Even though studies exist about how creativity should be taught in engineering education, there is still limited research about the challenges of practical implementation. To address this gap, an action research project has been conducted in two undergraduate Mechanical Engineering design subjects at a prominent university in Australia with the aim of enhancing creativity during the problem-solving process. The study shows the many challenges that arose when enhancing creativity in engineering design education, and the issues that surrounded this implementation. Although teaching creativity to engineering students is a challenge, this study illuminates the difficulties of convincing the engineering instructors to embed creativity in the subject...
