A WORLD OF FISH
Betta Splendens
Selection
Bettas have been
selectively bred for color
and finnage for over 100
years. Due to this effort,
Bettas are now among the
most colorful freshwater
fishes. Besides their
beauty, Bettas are also easy
to keep and can be maintained in small bowls
or aquariums at room temperature. Bettas
possess a labyrinth organ that allows them to
breathe air from the surface. This ability allows
Bettas to be kept in small aquariums or bowls
without filtration.
Bettas are kept in aquariums,
change about 25% of the water
once a week.
The type of water used for your
betta is very important. The best
choice of water is from a mature
aquarium
with
established
bacteria. If this is not available,
your next best choice is warm
(at least 72 F.) bottled spring
water; make sure not to use distilled water. If
you are using tap water, we recommend you
warm the water and use Kent Marine’s
Ammonia Detox, Kent’s Betta water
conditioner or Marineland’s Bio-Safe for
treating and conditioning the tap water.
Behavior
Feeding
Most male Bettas and some females are
extremely aggressive towards their own
species. Males will fight to the death when
placed together.
For this reason, it is
imperative that only one male be kept in a
single aquarium.
In feeding Bettas, we suggest a variety of foods
including Hikari, Kent and Marineland Betta
Pellets, flake foods, freeze-dried foods (tubiflex
worms), frozen foods, live brine shrimp or
bloodworms. Feed the fish a small amount of
food every other day.
Water Quality
Consult With Your Associate
In order to keep your Betta healthy, it is
necessary to do water changes regularly. The
water changes remove the build-up of fish
waste. Large two gallon bowls require water
changes every two weeks. Smaller bowls, such
as the glass ivy bowls in our store, require
water changes every two to three days. When
Bettas are beautiful and graceful fish. We at A
World of Fish hope that you give them a try. If
you have questions on Bettas or on any other
kinds of fish, please call the Fish Experts at A
World of Fish.
