In this paper the known conditions for the stability of singularly perturbed speed-gradient based... more In this paper the known conditions for the stability of singularly perturbed speed-gradient based control systems are extended to encompass the problems of speed-gradient based energy control of singularly perturbed Hamiltonian systems. General stability results for singularly perturbed nonlinear systems are given, which apply to the energy control of Hamiltonian systems. The application to controlled synchronization of two coupled pendulums is presented for two cases of the appearance of a small parameter in the system: the small inertia of a dynamical coupling link and the small inertia of a torquer. In both cases, comparison between asymptotic theoretical accuracy bounds and computer simulation results is performed.

ABSTRACT State-of-the-art of the field related to control of chaotic systems is surveyed. Several... more ABSTRACT State-of-the-art of the field related to control of chaotic systems is surveyed. Several major branches of research are discussed: feedforward (“nonfeedback”) control, “OGY method”, “Pyragas method”, traditional for control engineering methods of nonlinear and adaptive control. A new solution to the problem of angular velocity stabilization for the spinning spacecraft is suggested. Numerical simulation results are presented showing efficiency and robustness of the speed-gradient control strategy for suppression of possible chaotic motion of the spacecraft.

The speed-gradient method that has corroborated its utility for the sine-Gordon model, controlled through the manipulable parameters of the external electrical field and boundary actuation, is now generalized to the in-domain actuation, aiming to pump/dissipate the energy of the model to a desired level. Capabilities of the method are illustrated in numerical simulations.

Abstract The presence of actuator saturation can dramatically degrade the system performance. Sin... more Abstract The presence of actuator saturation can dramatically degrade the system performance. Since the feedback loop is broken when the actuator saturates the unstable modes of the regulator may then drift to undesirable values. The consequences are that undesired nonlinear oscillations appear and that the settling time may unacceptably increase. Rigorous analysis of nonlinear aircraft models is a very difficult task, that is why a numerical simulation is often used as an analysis and design tool. In this paper difficulties of numerical analysis related to the existence of hidden oscillations in the aircraft control system are demonstrated.
