1 Parts of Speech Parts of Speech We organize grammar into parts of speech. Learning how to use parts of speech will help you build sentences and improve your writing.

2 There are eight parts of speech:
Noun Pronoun Verb Adjective Adverb Preposition Conjunction Interjection

3 A noun names a person, place, thing, or idea.
Parts of Speech A noun names a person, place, thing, or idea. Person: Your brother is awake. Place: Let’s walk to the park. Thing: The dog jumps high. Idea: My happiness lasted all day.

4 José is my friend. He is my friend.
Parts of Speech A pronoun takes the place of one or more nouns. Some pronouns include I, you, he, she, it, we, and they. José is my friend. He is my friend.

5 A verb expresses an action or a state of being.
Parts of Speech A verb expresses an action or a state of being. Action: Ivan built a model airplane. State of Being: The airplane is red.

Parts of Speech An adjective is a word that describes a noun or a pronoun. Brandon carried the heavy box up the stairs.

7 Linda sang beautifully at the talent show.
Parts of Speech An adverb describes a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. Linda sang beautifully at the talent show.

8 The cat slept on the bookcase.
Parts of Speech A preposition shows the relationship of a noun or pronoun to another word in a sentence. The cat slept on the bookcase.

9 Tim and Kiya are in my class. I like red apples but not green apples.
Parts of Speech A conjunction connects words, phrases, or clauses in a sentence. Coordinating conjunctions include and, but, and or. Tim and Kiya are in my class. I like red apples but not green apples. Would you like a fork or a spoon?

10 Parts of Speech An interjection expresses emotion. It may stand alone or appear as part of the sentence. Hey, did you see that? Wow! That was amazing.
