The 128th Durban July, Africa’s most prestigious horse racing event, concluded with a spectacular victory for Oriental Charm. This exhilarating win marks the second consecutive triumph for trainer Brett Crawford in the R5 million Hollywoodbets Durban July.

An Impressive Display of Stamina and Speed

Oriental Charm, a three-year-old colt owned by Greg Bortz, Leon Ellman, and Gina Goldsmith, showcased remarkable stamina and speed throughout the race. Jockey JP van der Merwe’s bold strategy to push Oriental Charm to the front early on paid off handsomely as they maintained the lead until the finish line.

Despite fierce competition from underdogs Cousin Casey and Royal Victory, Oriental Charm held firm. The race was not without its share of drama, as top contender See It Again encountered challenges mid-race, adding to the day’s excitement.

A Repeat Success for Brett Crawford

Trainer Brett Crawford’s meticulous preparation for Oriental Charm mirrored his approach with last year’s winner, Winchester Mansion. This careful planning and execution paid off, resulting in a well-deserved victory for the team.

The Durban July is more than just a horse race; it is a cultural event that attracts over 40,000 spectators. This year, attendees were treated to an unforgettable performance by the beloved South African group Mango Groove, adding to the festive atmosphere and making it a memorable day for all.

Race Highlights and Final Standings

The race started with Purple Pitcher leading as the gates opened, but Oriental Charm and Flag Man quickly positioned themselves at the front. The early pace was intense, causing some jostling for position, notably affecting Master Redoute and Shoemaker.

Both strong contenders, Winchester Mansion and See It Again found themselves in the middle of the pack. Green With Envy, the pre-race favorite, struggled to make an impact from the rear.

As the race progressed, Oriental Charm maintained a strong lead, with Flag Man close behind. Royal Victory made a significant push on the outside, while Cousin Casey and See It Again moved along the inside rail. In a thrilling finish, Oriental Charm drifted towards the inside rail, narrowly holding off Cousin Casey, who finished second, and Royal Victory, who came in third. Flag Man secured fourth place, just ahead of See It Again.

The 2024 Durban July once again proved why it is considered Africa’s greatest horse race, combining top-tier sporting action with festive entertainment.
