How Do We Get Our Data?

Skylight utilizes a blend of free data sources such as Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, Landsat 8-9, and Night Lights, along with commercial partners like Maxar and Spire.

This data mix allows us to offer unparalleled insights into vessel behavior, which we refer to as Events. By working today for tomorrow’s challenges, we are continuously exploring new and emerging data types to integrate.

What Do We Track?

Types of Events

Skylight offers a focused approach to vessel tracking, avoiding the clutter of traditional displays. Our platform emphasizes the automatic identification of specific vessel behaviors, simplifying maritime monitoring for enhanced efficiency and clarity.

Night Lights

AI sifts through extensive collections of satellite imagery to identify vessels of varying sizes, correlating them with AIS data and highlighting those vessels not broadcasting their position within a short span of a few hours (“dark” vessels).

Dark Rendezvous

The platform utilizes a custom-built AI model that surfaces vessel movement that could indicate a rendezvous with another, non-AIS transmitting vessel. Indications of such encounters include slow speeds and alterations in course, among other factors.

Fishing

State-of-the-art AI monitors 100 million AIS messages every day, pinpointing fishing vessels globally in real-time. Skylight's AI model focuses on industrial fishing methods, including trawling, purse seining, longlining, and squid jigging.

Standard Rendezvous

Automatically generated when two vessels broadcasting on AIS are near one another for a certain amount of time, which could indicate potential fisheries transshipments, bunkering (or fuel transfers), or exchanges of supplies.

Entry

An Entry Event notifies a user that an AIS-transmitting vessel has entered an area they define, whether it is an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), a Marine Protected Area (MPA), or other regions of interest. Skylight allows users to easily customize these in the platform to tailor monitoring parameters to specific needs or preferences.

Speed Range

Users can choose to monitor an area for vessels exceeding speed limits or loitering in ways not captured by other Events. Such monitoring is instrumental in safeguarding marine life, identifying vessels in distress, and detecting possible illegal fishing within marine protected areas.
