Mod Podge Image Transfer Sign | wood, craft | Turn a piece of scrap wood into pretty decor with a printed image and some Mod Podge! #crafts #diy #valentines #upcycled #greendiy #craftymama... | By Sustain My Craft Habit - Clever DIY, Crafts & Upcycling Ideas | Did you know that you could use a piece of scrap wood and a beautiful image printed at home on your inkjet printer to create a lovely piece of decor? I found this piece of wood actually in my father-in-law's scrap wood pile a couple of years ago and it's been collecting dust in my basement so I thought it'd be really fun to try this image transfer technique. After painting the entire surface with some white chalky paint and then letting that dry. I cut out this image that I had printed just with my inkjet printer at home onto regular copy paper. I actually cut through two sheets of paper. The image itself as well as a scrap piece of paper because I planned to do a buffalo check paint design later so you'll see why that second layer was important. Once cut out, I applied a really generous coat of Mod Podge over the surface of the printed design. So, this is on the right side of the paper and then turn that face down onto my painted surface. So you can see the second sheet is in behind and I'm just using a little bit of masking tape to hold all of that in place. Now I use that second sheet because like I said I was planning to do this buffalo check painted design and I knew I'd be putting the masking tape over top. So I didn't want the masking tape to rip off my image sheet. And so that scrap paper sheet is just there to help protect the image below. Now to paint the buffalo check design we start by placing strips of masking tape horizontally to create evenly spaced stripes. And then I'm mixing up a little bit of white paint plus some of this teal because I want my buffalo checks to be teal and white. So here we first want to have a nice light shade of whichever colour you're planning to use. You can see it's just a really light teal colour. And then I that onto create the stripes in the areas that are not covered by the masking tape. Now after drying this with my heat tool you could let it air dry the heat tool just helps speed it up I removed those strips of tape and just set them aside because we will need them again for the step after this next one but after removing these horizontal strips of tape I'm going to repeat this process by using vertical pieces of tape. And I like to start in the centre and then work outwards. So you're going to place one strip down. Place the second one and use that to help with the spacing. And then continue on either side. Once the tape is in place you're going to use the same light shade of teal paint to paint those stripes. Now the next step it's important to bring your original pieces of tape. You could use new pieces of tape but we're trying to reduce the waste and put them back over where you originally had them. So when you look through your paint you'll see where there's still an unpainted area and that's where you want your tape stripes to go. And what you'll be left with is these little squares where you'll add a darker shade of teal paint. Now after drying it's going to be the moment of truth to see if our taping worked and ta the it's looking really good. This buffalo check has the darker teal squares surrounded by the lighter teal and white squares. Okay so now it's time to add some embellishments to our sign. I did this craft on a Facebook Live and my viewers suggested I write the phrase cheers on there so that's what we ended up doing. You could use a phrase cut out or your cricket machine to cut a really cute word. But I just used some acrylic paint and hand painted this cheers word. And now the part that always makes me a little nervous is that image transfer going to work. And so I started by wetting the paper with just some water. And then I used my fingers you can use a little scrub cloth to scrub away that layer of paper. And yay it worked. Look at that beautiful design. You might notice that as the paper dry you'll have to go back and repeat the scrubbing wedding and scrubbing process a couple of times I actually had to do it three whole times to really get that nice vivid image below I just love this technique you could use it for photos or any other designs that you have. See now I dried it and it looks pretty good so we're going to proceed I added a little bit of this fuzzy ribbon that's an adhesive ribbon all the way around and then finish it off by gluing on these two sola wood flowers that I had previously dyed and there you go a little sign to add a sweet touch to your valentines decorating made with some scrap wood and an image transfer.
