Book Quotes

Self-help is a prison. If you've ever tried to overcome something you can't defeat in your own strength, you know exactly what I'm talking about. We tend to approach life's difficulties and our own dysfunctions with a self-help mindset because trying harder is how we usually get things done here on Earth. But striving doesn't lead to connection to God or spiritual growth and healing. Those things require surrender.

Denial Costs Us Who We Are
Digging into the past to identify key issues and beliefs that hold you back isn’t the same as dwelling on it. It’s not indulging self-pity. Rather, it’s doing what’s necessary to heal and move forward. Processing the past won’t cause you to get stuck in it. It will help you get free of it.
Author Quotes from the Anti-Self-Help Book
I spent most of my life thinking I was unlovable and unworthy. That was not reality, but it seemed to be supported by my experiences. As humans, we often fail to see the truth about ourselves. That's why we need God's help to correct our false perceptions of reality. Once the wounds and false beliefs which obscure our vision fall away, things become clear. Our job is not try to correct the beliefs of others, but to allow God to correct OUR OWN VISION OF REALITY.
Quotes from the Anti-Self-Help Book
When we are suffering, we often forget to look at ourselves to see how we might be contributing to our pain. We focus on trying to control our circumstances and other people which is futile. While innocent suffering is unavoidable, most suffering can be improved if we are willing to examine and take responsibility for the things we do control: our own thoughts and responses. If we have the courage to change the things we are responsible for, we can move forward instead of drowning in suffering.
Quotes from the Anti-Self-Help Book
It's tempting to think that whatever we deny becomes invisible. But denying our bad behavior doesn't make it less visible to others. It just makes it less visible to ourselves. If we refuse to admit our shortcomings for long enough, we eventually buy into our own charade. We fool no one but ourselves, and we guarantee that we will never change. We don't change what we refuse to acknowledge.
Quotes from the Anti-Self-Help Book
Following Christ is NOT about becoming a good person. It's about finding your God-given identity. It doesn't shackle you to a list of do's and don'ts. It frees you to act like yourself. While many Christians act like their religion makes them better than others, real Christi-followers acknowledge their flaws and are on a journey to become the person God made them to be. Performance-based, legalistic Christianity results in hypocrisy and pride. It's the anti-thesis to being forgiven and reborn.
Quotes from the Anti-Self-Help Book
We all crave the ability to get what we want and avoid what we don't want. Satisfaction and protection are two of our primary objectives. We can spend a lifetime pursuing them and still somehow manage to feel deprived and vulnerable. When we are controlling, it's usually because we're trying to get what we want or avoid what we don't want. But thse things are often outside of our control. The real question is whether or not we trust God to be our provider and protector, and if not, why?
Quotes from the Anti-Self-Help Book
Knowing about God is different than experiencing His love and transformative power. If we embrace theology but ignore the transformation God wants to bring to our lives, we become hard-hearted biblical experts, incapable of reflecting the truth of who God really is.
Quotes from the Anti-Self-Help Book
We think God is focused on changing our behavior, when in reality He's focused on changing the things that keep us from experiencing His love and being able to love others. He will always point us toward the pain and lies that drive our bad behavior, in hopes that we will recognize them as our true Enemy and allow Him to help us find freedom from them.
Quotes from the Anti-Self-Help Book
Counterfeits can be substances, activities, possessions, or anything that captivates our heart. Unlike God’s gifts, which bring freedom and joy, counterfeits bring pain and bondage. An affair feels like love, but it ruins our marriage. Drugs free us from the pain and boredom of life, but they trap us in addiction. Possessions give us a sense of success, but the cost of needing them is being owned by them. Satan engineers counterfeits to engage us, imprison us, and eventually destroy us.
Quotes from the Anti-Self-Help Book
Because we’re not God, we can’t do His job. We are limited, fallible human beings, able to control precious little (other than ourselves). We believe if we can recognize a potential threat soon enough, we can evade it more effectively. We believe if we handle things perfectly, we won't have to face the disapointment of others, or the devastating consequences we fear. The world is a scary place when our caution is the only source of protection against what we worry about the most.
Quotes from The Anti-Self-Help Book
Controlling actions often damage our relationships and sour our attitudes. When we try to take control, the result is pain and frustration because control is a counterfeit. We were created for trust. It’s almost impossible not to grasp at control when life feels out of control. It’s easy to believe that as long as we remain in control, we won’t have to forgo our heart’s desires or be the victim of unnecessary difficulties. Over time, however, control leaves us exhausted, anxious, and frustrated.
Quotes from the Anti-Self-Help Book
At the end of the day, we’re all control freaks. Whether we dominate or play the victim, whether we attempt to control people or situations, we all desperately want to be in the driver’s seat. Though we are quite skilled at maintaining the illusion of control, there are precious few things in this life that we actually control. It’s honestly pretty frustrating. Acknowledging our helplessness is the first step toward giving control to One who actually has power to change people and situations.
Quotes from the Anti-Self-Help Book
Getting real with ourselves and other people about our imperfections deals the death blow to our self-righteous facade. After honest confession, we can no longer maintain the illusion that we have it all together. It’s game over for our pride. Openly encouraging safe people to point out our failures makes it impossible to maintain denial. It puts us in a position to continually humble ourselves and work on our defects.
Quotes from the Anti-Self-Help Book
We need to get real with God an dothers when we fail. Forgiveness cannot occur and healing cannot begin without confession. Owning up. The word confession in the Greek language means “to say the same thing as another” or “to assent.” Confession isn’t just admitting our wrongs; it’s agreeing with God about our behavior. It’s seeing our sin the way He sees it. It helps us grieve over pain we caused, which motivates us to avoid the same error.
Quotes from the Anti-Self-Help Book
Spiritual growth works very differently than losing weight or succeeding at school. Trying harder doesn't move us forward in our relationship with God. Our work is to surrend to what He's trying to do in us. The more we obsess about our spiritual performance, the more focused we become on ourselves...our successes and failures...instead of of God. True spiritual growth is a by-product of surrender, humility, willingness, and transparency. We can't fix ourselves, but we know the One who can.
