John E. Sader

Research Professor of Aerospace and Applied Physics

John Sader is an applied mathematician with over 30 years of experience in collaborative research that have focused on a broad range of areas, including fluid and solid mechanics, colloid science, plasmonics, and advanced scientific instrumentation. John is perhaps best known for developing experimental techniques that are widely used in atomic force microscopy, including the Sader Method which is implemented in commercial instruments.

He gained his PhD from the University of New South Wales, Australia, in electrical engineering and then joined the University of Melbourne in 1992 as a research fellow, progressing to Professor of Applied Mathematics until moving to the US to join the research faculty of Caltech in 2022. John is an elected fellow of the Australian Academy of Science (2021), the Australian Mathematical Society (2021), and the Australasian Fluid Mechanics Society (2018).

John's approach to research in applied mathematics is described in this video, produced by the Australian Academy of Science.
