THE OLD GENERAL STORE

My grandfather used to take me to the old general store near his house in Bristol Valley, N.Y. The center of the store contained several wooden chairs and stools, a wooden barrel with a checker board on top and a large pot belly stove. The walls had shelves to the ceiling where the groceries were displayed. The clerk had to reach the upper shelves with a pole that had a clamp on the end. We usually went to buy my granfather's favorite snack...fried cakes (cake donuts).

This old country store reminds me of a family trip to Dawson Creek, Yukon Territory, Canada, to visit my great-grandfather's store where my grandmother spent a few years as a child.
