about
PYNE (aka Alanna Stuart of Bonjay) follows up her debut solo single ‘Karma Police (Femmehall Version)’ with a release on Equiknoxx Music further delving into her femmehall sound, a more feminine approach to dancehall production and performance, with Pum Pum Poetry produced by Equiknoxx and Kat7’s Gavsborg.
PYNE and Gavsborg created Pum Pum Poetry in the Equiknoxx Music studio in Kingston, Jamaica. Pum Pum Poetry demonstrates the creative chemistry that emerged from their dancehall kinship: Pitchfork credited Equiknoxx with “making dancehall weird again,” and the New York Times praised Bonjay for its “Canadian dancehall.” After several collaborations and a West African tour later in 2020 with stops in Côte D'ivoire, Pum Pum Poetry expands on this longtime connection, and tests how far the dancehall template can stretch and bend.
PYNE’s vocal dexterity and versatility and Gavsborg’s hypnotic production takes full advantage of dancehall’s “anything goes” ethos. One moment, PYNE’s vox cuts with lines like “my pum pum is murder when me fit it pon your jugular'' with a directness familiar to dancehall fans. But, then, she surprises with a whisper-like vocal delivery and, then, punches through with a Pentacostal-like chant “Dis ya pum pum poetry!” PYNE’s lyricism and vocal stylings deftly convey pum pum’s multiplicity. As PYNE puts it "Pum Pum Poetry is an ode to the soft power of the pum pum. Pum pum can please or wreck you. It isn't simply anatomy; pum pum is an attitude."
PYNE’s vocal performance turns into a serenade as Pum Pum Poetry takes on another dimension in the expansive instrumental space of its mix-friendly outro. Gavsborg’s repeated “hey gal” refrain blurs into an extended section of beautiful yet sinister keys, synths and razor sharp drum programming as PYNE’s calls ground us within the attitude of the piece.
PYNE is a multidimensional music artist and producer based in Toronto, Canada and Kingston, Jamaica. She is a featured collaborator on works by kindred forward-thinkers: U.S. Girls, Junior Boys, Shanique Marie, Act! and Jeremy Dutcher. PYNE dually honours Jamaican techniques and attitudes to creative expression while paying homage to the underground indie and bass scenes of Canada.
