Running an ER often does not take into account the story of the patient. Burned out doctors, rigid hierarchies, and insurance roadblocks is the reality, without blame or judgment, physicians often forget the duality inherent in the doctor patient relationship. Especially when it comes to psychiatric care, when a diagnosis cannot be readily made, a patient can fall by the wayside. Better health care begins with a patient narrative and a doctor willing to listen. EMERGENCY takes a closer look at one patient story. Perhaps, just one story is a good place to start.
