Paterson Ferns and entrepreneur Joe Mandel look back on the making of the screen adaptation of Timothy Findley's Governor General's Prize-winning novel, The Wars (1983). Created and recorded via Zoom during the pandemic lock-down in 2020 to mark the return of The Wars to the public domain after a thirty-five year absence, this content offers unique insights into the work's symbols and creation. Directed by Robin Phillips - former Artistic Director of Canada's Stratford Festival - with music by renowned Canadian composer Glenn Gould and adapted for the screen by Findley himself, The Wars centres on Robert Ross (Brent Carver), the nineteen-year-old son of an upper-class Rosedale family who enlists to serve in the Canadian Army during World War I to escape the social norms of Edwardian society. Drawn into the madness of war, it becomes another way for him to resolve his conflicts, his dramas, his passions-his wars. The film blends powerful scenes set during the tumult of war with sequences depicting Robert's formative experiences from childhood that led him to enlist, including his complicated relationships with his sister Rowena and his parents.
