He takes an opportunity to spy upon her at a villa to which he is ordered to drive her, and what he sees leads him to believe that she has a secret lover. He writes an anonymous note to her husband, telling him to watch his wife next time she goes to the Villa of Roses. When next he drives the lady to the villa, he is joined by the husband at the gate, and together they follow to the house and peer into a room. Infuriated at seeing his wife inside, the husband draws a revolver and would shoot her, but the chauffeur restrains him. Together they hide in the grounds, and as the woman passes the husband fires. The chauffeur leaps forward and receives the bullet in his own breast, and as he sinks to the ground the woman, touched by his devotion, kisses him for the first and last time. Written by
