But his plans go awry when Gordon, the owner of the Comet car, meets Naroche, a celebrated French driver, and engages him to pilot the racer. Sinton, facing heavy losses, desperately instructs his unscrupulous aids to use every means at their command to prevent Naroche and the Comet reaching the scene of the race. The conspirators lay plans to delay the special bearing the Gordon party. Helen, at Lone Point, learns of the plans and speeds in a handcar to the Melius drawbridge to give warning. Sinton's aids attempt to forestall her by overpowering the bridge tender and raising the draw. Helen, tearing ahead at great speed, plunges through the open draw, barely escaping death as the heavy handcar overturns and strikes the water. Swimming to the opposite shore, Helen races down the track and succeeds in stopping the special in the nick of time.
