In the final, he wins gold and breaks the world record, but, when thrown off balance, he shows the Soviet audience an unsportsmanlike, offensive gesture. "Wal" is considered a political gesture and the life of our athlete changes from day to day. Initially, Kozakiewicz becomes a national hero and gains enormous popularity and influence. However, when a crisis of form comes, the distinguished pole vaulter is attacked by sports activists loyal to the communist system.
