The girl at first rebels, but at last gives way to her father's entreaties. An effective scene shows the departure of the pair from the church on the wedding morning, and the rejected lover's disconsolate grief. In despair he drinks heavily for a long period, and brings himself to poverty. The husband of the woman he loves takes pity on him and helps him to regain his self-respect. A few years later the husband is killed in an accident, and not long afterwards the young fellow, now in a good position, learns from the widow that "love can never die."
