She is fond of both of them, but her real love goes to Jack. Although Jack does not know it, Dan is soon aware of the fact and nurses his grief. Troop A, of which they are members, is deputed to ten days' scouting duty on the desert. The troop splits into fours, Jack and Dan leave their companions, arranging to meet them later. They dismount to investigate the remains of a campfire, and their horses, becoming restless, run off. The boys believe that their companions will find them, but the latter thinking that Jack and Dan have preceded them, they return to camp. Both boys suffer terribly from thirst, Jack the worst. He falls exhausted. Dan spies a water hole through his field glasses. He is too weak to carry his pal and Jack cannot walk. Dan is at his wits' end and conceives a plan. Taking Elizabeth's portrait and his watch and chain from Jack, he taunts him and tells him that he, Dan, will claim and marry Elizabeth. Love and jealousy do the work and Dan gradually leads his comrade near the water hole by taunts and showing him his sweetheart's picture. Dan finally staggers to the waterhole and revives Jack and himself. They are rescued by the anxious troopers and eventually return home, where Dan is rewarded by hearing Jack tell of the trick played upon him and by receiving the caress from Elizabeth.
