One day, Tonio sees a wounded rooster and tends to it instead of cooking it for supper. Convinced of Tonio's benevolence, the rooster transforms into a magical phoenix. It tells the kind-hearted peasant that he can obtain a pot of gold if he would only be patient enough to chase a ball of fire called San Telmo, which is believed to be the guardian of the pot of gold.
