This decision fulfilled the request of the British corporation Shell, which claimed that this method of disposal was the most environmentally friendly option. Greenpeace launched one of its most significant campaigns in its history. Blockades, boycotts of Shell tankers, and mass protests not only forced Shell to adopt a genuinely environmentally sound solution (dismantling the platform on land), but also compelled the countries of the Northeast Atlantic to reach an agreement that no old platforms would be sunk in the region again.
