They race to the apartment of a young woman living alone, and find the body of another resident on the floor near her bed. The young woman claims that the man raided her room and she shot him in self-defense. The District Attorney believes part of the story, but claims the victim wasn't threatening the young woman and files manslaughter charges against her. But that's not half of the story. The young woman is blind. She only heard the intruder and panicked, grabbing a pistol from her bed stand drawer and firing wildly. One bullet drilled the victim through the heart -- but the other one can't be found. When the weapon is examined, only one round is spent. Did everybody hear a phantom second shot? Petrocelli cross-examines the woman, handing her an "unloaded" pistol and asking her to pull the trigger on his count. He's actually loaded a blank cartridge into the chamber and she can't tell the difference, so when the gun detonates she cries out that she's killed her lawyer. That makes Petrocelli believe that maybe she didn't kill anyone. Some snooping around the San Remo, Arizona (actually Tucson) police department reveals that the dead man was an undercover cop -- giving somebody plenty of motive to murder him beforehand and dump his corpse in the young woman's lap!
