His partner, Schroeder, is released from prison in Austria but is bitter at his treatment, and reminds Duval he cannot be tried again for the same crime. He evades the police and is able to enter Kaltmann's hospital, and shoot him. Kaltmann is taken for surgery where Schroeder sees him die and calmly surrenders; when heart massage revives him, Duval points out the crime - now in Germany, not Austria - is attempted murder.
