She recognizes him, but he has never seen her before and accepts her for the farmer's daughter she pretends to be. The budding romance interferes with play writing, and when the manager sends him a hurry call for the play he has nothing to offer. His spirits are further dashed by the farmer's gruff refusal to let "Nellie marry a city chap." When he meets her again, in the manager's office, she produces her diary, in which she has recorded their romance, and offers it to him as the material he needs for a play, which is to end in the good old-fashioned way.
