In this amusing sketch he has a frightful toothache, and beseeches his office manager to let him leave early to go to the dentist. His request being refused, he attempts to turn the hands of the clock forward, but is caught in the act. He suffers in silence and hardly has the clock struck the hour of six than he is off on the jump to have the pestiferous molar attended to. As it happens, the dentist is busy and poor Whiffles has to wait. Now the dentist has a social engagement that evening, and forgetting Whiffles, departs to keep his appointment. After moments of waiting that seem hours. Whiffles enters the dentist's office, and finds it empty. He tries to leave the house but discovers that he is locked in. The maid has had an engagement also. The only means of egress left is by the window. He descends from it by means of a rope of sheets and falls into the arms of two waiting policemen. Hauled to headquarters, he is locked up for the night, despite his protests. The next morning the forgetful dentist is called in; he remembers Whiffles and the sufferer thus is discharged with torn clothing and a black eye as souvenirs. Arriving at his office our hero finds himself late very late. In the altercation which follows with the office manager he receives a slap on the jaw which removes the aching tooth, so minus his job and his tooth, but happy, he seeks a new market for his labors.
