Wedd, at his friend Darby's instigation, began to pay marked attention to beautiful Dora Wayne, he ran up against a snag from the very start: Dora owned a dog. Wood B., who hated dogs collectively and individually, would not have minded the mere fact that Dora owned a dog, had it not been that she seemed to care so much for the brute. Gyp, the dog, had a disposition which had evidently been spoiled in his youth. Realizing that Wood B. hated him, he took no pains to conceal his own feeling toward Wood B. Wedd. Accordingly, Gyp would, on occasion, bite Wood B. When Dora went away from town for a few weeks and asked Wood B. to take care of her precious Gyp while she was gone, Wood gladly consented, not because he loved Gyp, but because he hoped that his noble spirit of unselfishness would make an impression on Gyp's mistress. Gyp did not care a bit about the change in domicile; he made himself perfectly at home in Wood B.'s house, and inside of a week, he ran the place. Wood B. was afraid to assert himself in the slightest. One morning, while the enslaved Wood was taking his master out for a walk, Gyp spied a cat; thrilled with the possibilities of chase and mortal combat, he escaped from Wood B. and set off in pursuit. Wood B., torn between conflicting desires, followed. After Gyp had led Wood B. into an extremely unpleasant altercation with a washerwoman, he disappeared. Wood B., filled with horror at the possibility of Dora returning, and finding that he had lost her precious Gyp, advertised in the papers, offering a reward for the dog's return. After a vivid experience with a few hundred boys carrying lost, stray, and stolen dogs, Gyp was finally regained in an extremely disheveled condition. Dora returned, and Wood B. hurried to her with the dog. Dora told him sweetly that he might keep Gyp to remember her by.
