Out of sympathy. Carton engages him as his private secretary. Fenwick, taking advantage of Carton's confidence, takes money that does not belong to him. By chance Carton receives a letter which enlightens him, and Fenwick is discharged. Fenwick tells his wife Carton's suspicions are unfounded, but, fearing prosecution, sends his wife to Carton's apartment to steal the letter.
