There is an argument between the two men. Stefan declares his love to Ruzha and threatens to resort to murder - so strong is his desire to have her as wife. Ognyan and Stefan leave for the front. Ognyan is sent to silence an enemy machine gun. Stefan joins him. While Ognyan is getting the grenades ready, Stefan intends to kill him but misses his opportunity. The two capture the position, turn the machine gun round and start firing at the retreating enemy soldiers. Stefan is seriously wounded. Ognyan carries him back. Stefan makes a full confession of his intents. Ognyan forgives him. Ruzha and her girlfriend eagerly await the soldiers returning from the front. Ognyan is not among them.
