He refuses, saying that he wouldn't think of doing anything of this sort. However, that night his friends call for him, deceive Mrs. Smith as to where they are going, and take Smith to the supper, where drinks too much. He reaches home and manages to get into bed without awakening his wife. The next morning his wife suspects him, but he swears to her that he left the club supper without taking a drink, that on the way home he was attacked and beaten up by two men. At this critical moment, Mrs. Smith observes two red marks on his forehead, left there by a cabaret dancer's lips. The wife believes the marks to be blood and sends for a doctor.
