His applications become too frequent, but Mrs. Black has a weakness for court news and high society, so she tells her nephew that if he will introduce her to some of the aristocratic friends he is always boasting about, she will give him money, and if she can make a match with one of them, she will give him more--otherwise, her purse is closed. He proposes that his actor friend Hartley pose as Lord Ormon le De Verde. Hartley, a decent chap, does not like the job, but he is out of work and in pretty hard straits, so at last he consents. The scheme works well; Julia is infatuated and gives her nephew the advance fee, but it goes further than he expected: she actually makes a leap-year proposal to Hartley. He writes her that circumstances which he cannot explain have called him from England, perhaps forever. She is terribly upset and gives Martin money and tells him to find her lover and bring him back to her. Meanwhile, on returning home, Hartley finds that he has secured a London engagement. Things look good for him, but his conscience troubles him. Not satisfied with the way Martin is conducting things, Mrs. Black comes to London herself. Martin tells his servants to get tickets for the theater and Jenkins gets them for the theater at which Hartley is playing. Martin discovers this when too late. Mrs. Black sees Hartley and makes a scene. Then suspecting her nephew she uses stratagem and gets Hartley's address. She goes to him and accuses him and he confesses. She is in a terrible rage and threatens to prosecute him. In spite of his penitence and his wife's prayers, Little Nellie, their daughter, wins Mrs. Black's heart, and for her sake she forgives, but she hands her nephew $20 and tells him to get out of England and never come back.
