The next morning the girl gives birth to a child and the whole village is scandalized. The deacon in particular is astounded that the doctor should ever think of harboring a person who must be evil and calls to see what can be done. The doctor refuses to turn out the girl and the deacon leaves in a huff. Later the deacon gets some of the old ladies in the town together and they protest to the doctor, threatening to ostracize him if he does not turn the girl out. Still he is adamant. Then the deacon's son, Wilbur, comes home. In the meanwhile the old doctor has learned from the delirious ravings of the girl that Wilbur is the father of the child. But the girl will not tell her betrayer's name. At last Wilbur can stand it no longer and decides to go to the city to find the girl whom he has wronged and marry her. Just as he is leaving the old doctor takes him home and leads him to the room where the girl is with her child. Then follows a happy reunion. The deacon is summoned, and he turns against his son. He threatens to disinherit him if he has anything more to do with Ruth. The son turns on his father and denounces him. When the son has finished his denunciation the old deacon is subdued, as Wilbur is all he has in life and he cannot bear to lose him.
