A group of young and fearless politicians fight daily for democratic reform and against the prevalence of post-Soviet era politics in today's Ukraine. Antagonized by their political opponents, they represent a beacon of hope to many others in a society growing more and more apolitical. Three years since the beginning of the Maidan revolution, old structures remain in place. Corruption, bribery, and blackmailing are still en vogue as the same national elites protect their wealth and privilege and neglect the needs of ordinary citizens. The spirit of the Euromaidan revolution has evaporated and previous enthusiasm made way for disaffection. Yet a group of young and energetic men and women refuse to hand back their country to kleptocratic elites. They were activists and protesters during the Euromaidan and have joined the ranks of parliamentary politics today. They represent a new generation of progressive minds in the Ukrainian parliament, who, as political underdogs, struggle to overcome a system based on fraud and crime in hopes of strengthening its nascent and fragile democratic institutions.
