As Margaret motored up Fifth Avenue she ordered her chauffeur to stop at her florist. "Back in a minute," Margaret told him, and she was back in a minute, but to find the interior of her car very much changed. Over on the seat was a cooing, gurgling baby. "You perfect Angel!" Margaret said. "Where did you drop from?" But the baby merely gurgled. "'Baby Lily." "Oh, you are Baby Lily, are you?" Margaret asked, "and where did you come from?" At this moment a well-groomed man came up to Margaret and told her that he saw a woman put the baby in the car. He offered to take the child to the police. The chauffeur also suggested that the baby should go to the police, but Margaret would have none of it, and determined, then and there that, if Lily's mother did not appear, she herself would adopt the child. But Margaret had counted without Mrs. Knickerbocker. Her aunt was horrified at the idea of this strange baby being brought into the house and told Margaret she would have to get rid of it immediately. Margaret, however, determined that her old negro Mammy Sally should take temporary charge of the child. The next day Margaret started for Gloucester where she is to visit the John Hays Hammonds.
