[request] consultation for a whitepaper
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

Basic Information Section

Brief description

  • The Research team is leading an effort to write a whitepaper that will guide researchers (with a focus on those outside of WMF) in understanding community values when conducting research (with a particular focus on privacy). The parent task is at T337883. We believe it is important to have the input/feedback from your team's perspective on the whitepaper given your focus and extensive work on efforts such as data publication guidelines. We are requesting up to 10 hours of your team's time during Q3 to support us with consultation. We can work with more or fewer hours if that helps. :)

Do you have a project/product/program plan or documentation?

@leila Hi! Would love to hear more about what you're thinking with regard to privacy :) Feel free to schedule something with me or continue the conversation here!

@Htriedman Thanks for following up. I booked a 15-min for the two of us to connect. The core of the issue this whitepaper is trying to tackle is: there is no shared understanding, best practices, or guidelines that can help researchers who want to study (English) Wikipedia to know how to respect Wikipedia community's privacy (beyond what's stated in WMF's privacy policy which is clearer for both researchers externally and of course for ArbCom members.) This makes it hard for researchers to do research effectively on WP; it has also created issues at the time of escalations for ArbCom (see T337883). (Happy to continue here as well and be guided by your questions.)
